Hi,
I have been to California and have a good friend living in Orange County! There is quite a difference between California and Nebraska! I liked visiting California but I wouldn't want to live there. Could be in part due to I've lived in Nebraska almost my whole life and I love it here!
In California it seems women are more...high maintenance? I know not all, but alot! Still, you see that everywhere I imagine.
I don't feel you'd be uncomfortable there at all. Depending on who you talk to, people DO want to hear about where you came from!!! I myself enjoy hearing things like this from people who relocated here and I'm from Nebraska!
I feel you would find a group of friends and would fit right in! I doubt though you would be hiding out as friends would be inviting you out for parties and going out places. Theres always things going on there, my young adult daughters both live there so I hear about it all. You would not be unhappy I feel.
The cost of living is lower here too. I was shocked when my friend told me how much houses were going for in California!!! And barely any yard around them! That's not for me! We've got a huge yard and bought our house for only 16,000!!!(we don't live in Lincoln but Neligh) It's old mind you. But the property is in a nice neighborhood within walking distance of many things and has huge trees and nice lawn!
Hope you do visit Lincoln and come meet Nebraska for yourself!

lol, don't mind Mattden, he thinks that Nebraska only consists of Omaha, and hasn't actually been anywhere else in the state, let alone getting to know anyone that actually calls it home. If I was to guess he probably still lives with his mom and dreams of making that big jump to Ohio.

I wanna thank everyone for their input--I think you guys are really nice people. LOL. Anyway, I just registered for my classes--I'm one step closer--craziness!
Anyway, if you can find it to answer another question (I know I've probably asked like 102 of them), are there like cute little houses near east campus? Cute, meaning, refurbished, with amenities, including, HEAT,). Like, is the surrounding area very suburban, or hotel-ly, or liquor store-ly, or just filled with apartments? Thanks!

Heat is an amenity? Wow. I don't think you fully grasp that this isn't some outhouse you're moving too.

Cafe,
The area around East campus is a little older. Its not what you would call a new suburban area, but its not a liquor store filled area either. Its filled with a mix of apartment buildings and small houses. I guess, if I were a girl, you could describe them as "cute", in some instances.

" I guess, if I were a girl, you could describe them as "cute", in some instances" LOL. That cracks me up for some reason--it's really very helpful of a response, acutally. I forgot that instead of cute, I should have said "comfortable and architecuturally striking".
Anyway, I wanted to be able to walk to my classes, do you think this is possible? I'm really trying to get a picture of what everything looks like--I was on the UNL site and its pictures don't really help--what surrounds the law college? I heard it was surrounded by a tractor testing field. Umm, I guess dirt is okay--like, when it's far away, but when it surrounds a building you'll be in, I don't know about all that.
Hey, RurualNebraska, I just saw your comment: "In California it seems women are more...high maintenance?" I guess me not liking dirt could, in a general sense, be considered high maintenance! I never really thought about it. Haha.

Cafe,
He he! Don't worry about the tractor testing facility. I think you're getting too worried about it. UNL is an excellent and very professional school. On East Campus, where the Law school reside, are a lot of the agricultural areas of study. However, its not as though you're going to the middle of a farm. Seriously, you won't probably even be aware of it. UNL is one of the best agriculture programs in the U.S. and its ran in a very professional manner. Here is a bit of trivia for you...the McRib sandwich was invented on East Campus. Yeah, the McRib is gross, but its a bit of useless info that just popped into my head.
Anyway, I live in a different part of town, but I would think that living near campus is a reasonable endeavor. Remember, it is an older part of Lincoln. If you're expecting big extravagant heavy on the amenities apartment complexes you probably won't find that over there. But you certainly could find a very reasonably priced apartment and/or a small house.
I, unfortunately, will be commuting from Omaha. I registered for law classes the other day and will be moving to Omaha in early July.

Cafe, directly across from the campus to the north is a Hyvee grocery store, with a strip mall attatched that includes a mediocre Chinese food place and a Wells Fargo bank. Across directly to the East is a couple of fast food places including Burger King and Winchells. There's also many small businesses and residential in both directions. Directly to the South is a residential area with mied small apartment complexes, homes, and apartments in divided houses. To the West there is residential and a couple blocks away (campus= 33rd,) there is 27th street which is a major Lincoln street housing restuarants and shops. About 2 miles from camus is a small mall.
The houses in the area are older. They are not what I would call "architecturally striking" but I am unaware of any of my fellow students who live in places without air conditioning or heat. In fact, we all have cable, internet, and flushing johns. I'm not poking fun at you, I promise. The media often perpetuates this myth that no one would want to live in Nebraska, but that's not true. In fact, there are dozens of major businesses located in Nebraska. Warren Buffet lives here, as does the founder of Godfather's pizza. InfoUSA, which is a major supplier of business information is located in Nebraska, as are many other huge businesses. We cannot compete with the urban sophistication of the coasts, but then, neither are we a place you will find yourself living a century in the past.
If you want, I can hook you up with a couple 2ls who live off campus and walk, they can direct you to some good areas to rent in. Did you sign up for a Delta Theta Phi big sister/brother?
Matt- I commute from Omaha (a lot of us do) and I actually enjoy the commute very much. It takes me approx. 47 minutes to get to school in the morning. I use the opportunity to listen to law school legends audio lectures. Then on the way home everyday I cranked up my angry music and let the stress of the day bleed out so I could be human with my kids and husband once I got home. It's really not a bad commute. What part of Omaha will you be living in?
Congrats on signing up for your classes! If you want some tips on how to handle a given professor's class, pm me and I'll gladly share.

Danni11,
I'll be living in west Omaha. We haven't decided on the exact house yet, but its down to two. One is in the area of 120th and Harrison and the other out by 178th and Harrison (which is practically Gretna). Yeah, I drive a lot back and forth already, so I'm not really worried about the commute. Like you mentioned, I think in some ways it'll be a way to ease into the day and unwind from it.
On the businesses in Nebraska note, I would throw in Ameritrade, Paypal, Union-Pacific, Peter-Kiewitt, and ConAgri as other megacorporations with their home offices in Nebraska.
Also, what the heck is "Delta Theta Phi big sister/brother". I think I might have missed that some how. Although, if its essentially a welcoming wagon I don't think I'll need it. But just in case its something that might be relevant to me then maybe you could clue me in.
