Surf this web site. It has lots of pictures and not all of them are about Nebraska. It also has some nice information that you might enjoy as well.

Nebraska from a transplants view
I moved to the Omaha area 3 years ago. (I am much older than you.)
Generally speaking if you don't like Orange county and don't care for all the shopping, gourmet foods, gourmet shops, clubs, tons to do etc. you'll probably like it here.
Lots of people love Nebraska including me. People come for awhile and decide to stay. Its full of easy going, semi-private very polite friendly people who live by midwest values.
To me it sounds like you are a California girl. Used to all the people, traffic and choices choices choices. Not just one or two clubs but clubs of every kind etc. etc. You won't get that here.
It will seem small, quiet and probably boring.
Frankly it doesn't sound to me like you really need the free ride if your questioning this at all.

By Giesela: I moved here to the Omaha area 3 years ago and may be leaving again in the next year or two.
The only thing I've really done is been to the State Fair and gone to see the Crane Migration.
What should I really try hard to see and/or do before I leave?
Chimney Rock? Tube the Niobrara? What?
Well based on your post in another thread I'd say you're hardly one to ask on advice for things to do.

Why not ask?
I don't really want to hijack this thread - why you didn't put your remark on my thread I don't know.
However, I don't see why I shouldn't be asking on advice for things to do?
I don't understand your question.
Because I might be leaving? Not totally my choice but I don't even think that matters.
Really it doesn't even matter if I am leaving or not - what are the best things to do in Nebraska? What are people's favorites?
what if I hadn't mentioned I might be leaving. What difference does it make?

Giesela: I think DTO means that based on your other post, you shouldn't be GIVING advice on what to do. The "ask" was I think, mistakenly typed. I agree with him. I could get my panties all up in a bunch with your post, seeing as how you have subtlely insulted me in a very non-insulting way by inferring that I am very young, therefore, vapid, a california girl, therefore, uber vapid, but I won't because my panties are way too pretty to get bunched up (pretty panties= my obession). If you don't even know all the things to do in Nebraska, then please don't tell me it's going to be boring, even in comparision to Orange County. And of course I need the free ride--who doesn't--it's just you shouldn't let money dictate everything in your life--source of influence, sure, but I like to think that money shouldn't play a role beyond that. I could always choose to pay the whole way through school, but then I'll be i$150,000 in debt once I come out. Is $150,000 worth my happiness? I don't know--that's why I'm questioning how people are, and how they live their lives over there. I like to think that Nebraska doesn't equal unhappiness. Reassurance that the Nebraskan way of life doesn't SUCK is all I need. Pretty vapid of a demand, huh?

As Keith Jackson would say, "WHOA NELLIE" there both of you. No matter where you live in this world, Nebraska or Orange County, California, you make the place where you live as much fun as you like or don't like. Giesela all this young lady is wanting is information about Nebraska and how we live. I would do the same thing that she has the chance at, to get a ride through law school, even if it was to the liberal hot bed of northern California. The reason for your move from Nebraska is not important and I don't care why you have to move. Just remember you will make your new home, no matter where it will be, what you make of it, nothing more and nothing less. I am a native born Nebraskan who has been to so many different parts of the world from living in Hawaii, California, South East Asia, Europe, east coast of America. No matter where I was I made the place what I wanted it to be myself. Did I hate some of the places yes I did, but I also found good things about all of the places as well. In looking I learned that there were more good than bad. I have found both the good and the bad in Nebraska, but I alway seem to return to Nebraska where my home is and I will return again after I leave Europe again in the future.
Once again to cafe du monde welcome to Nebraska and the UNL law school. I am sure you will find Nebraska a good experience and one that you will for ever treasure in your life. I am sure that you will have both the good and the bad experiences, but I am sure that the good will out weigh the bad. Also watch out for all of our cattle running loose in the street, just kidding. Do take a look at our weather site that I posted earlier so that this will not be a big shock to you. We have some rather flicked weather here, everything from extreme heat in the summer to extreme cold in the winter.

Very well said Kosnebbear, thanks for helping me out with my job. lol Sometimes people get off track and things get bent out of context, but you were there to point out the good with the bad.
Where ever you live is what you make of it, and having lived in Nebraska myself when I was much younger, it is still a great state. I still love driving through it and seeing all the changes being made. The people haven't changed a bit, very friendly and helpful as I have pointed out in another post.
Thanks again, for your help, and take care. Yorkie

rest assured that if your life is "All about you", NE and many other places will find you feeling very miserable. If Vegas and said experiences are your cup of tea, best not try to find happiness in Lincoln. It seems you have a more socially desirable location in mind. I'd suggest you follow that path at this point in your life.

To the OP, my experience may help you somewhat since I also moved to NE from a very urban area with lots of shopping, restaurants theater etc. The first year here I really hated it: it was a shock, I cannot deny that. However, after a depressing year in an apartment in the north-east section of town I moved to the Downtown area, it's called the Haymarket and there are some gorgeous apartments there that are very affordable: all of a sudden, I was within walking distance to restaurants, coffee shops, movie theaters, the University itself ( I came here for grad school also). This improved my perception of the city drastically!!! I had so much fun living there, and there was plenty to do on week-ends between movies, shows at the Lied center, farmer's market in the summer etc.
I can't say that it's the same as living in a huge metropolis but it is really a very nice place to be and the Law school is excellent: you will be busy studying and then in your free time you will form friendships with other grad students and you can explore the town or go to Omaha if you get bored. Omaha has lots of great shopping, very good restaurants and awesome concerts: they built an arena not too long ago which is getting ALL the big names in music (from the Rolling Stones to Justin Timberlake. . . !)
Feel free to ask questions if you need more help and good luck with your move!
PS: there are 3 or 4 really excellent restaurants in town too, I'd be happy to give you the names if you're interested.

Thank you new2pa for the nice post about Lincoln. You tell it from a person who lives the experience and I think that is the most important thing that most people what to hear. It does not matter if the remarks are negative of positive, what is important is that the post is about what you found and not what someone who put together a bunch of statical data.
As a individual who reads this site offen I want to rate this post as a positive post and help your reputation grow.
