I have friends in Council Bluffs, Iowa, that I visit a couple times a year. A lot of times I spend the night in Grand Island. Heartland hospitality is alive and well there.

One time I stopped into the Hastings CD and video store to pick up a little road music. Came out to the car and it wouldn't turn over. In about 10 minutes time there was three people around my car offering help.

I am black, and I am African, and I live in Grand Island. Here is an honest reply to any black African person who wants to move to Grand Island. No White person in Grand Island is going to hit you or insult you anywhere. That is very unlikely. They will laugh with you and give you the best smiles-but you just will not get a house or good job. There is subtle racism in Grand Island. African people, no matter how educated they are, never get good jobs. I have a Masters Degree(graduated in Fl with a GPA of 3.8) and they will not hire me even for jobs that are asking for high school Diploma! I would rather a racist who tells me he is racist than a sneaky one!I had to sue two apartment complexes for them to give me a place to stay becauase they did not want to do so only because I am Black. The case is still pending. So do not expect an easy time in Nebraska., especially in Grand Island.

They know the law does not allow racism, but they have ways and means of going around the law. e.g, I applied for a Job in this place- two days later I received an anonymous call in which I was told that the caller was a representative of several employers whose identities are confidential- the caller interviewed me for an anonymous job. I know that the "caller" was from the organization I had alppilied for a job from because that is the only job I had applied for in four months. As soon as I told ther that I am of African origin, the interview, which was supposedf to be 45 minutes, ended in three minutes!

When I first arrived in Grand Island I was told by other African people that, " Here in Grand Island they only want us for servants. They do not want us to take their children's jobs. So forget about your education and look for a job where you can be a servant for the people of Grand Island, like CNA ". Many African people with education are languishing in Grand Island without jobs because of racism. The worst thing is that the city of Grand Island is the leader of the racism(I can prove it). Remember the African proverb that "Meno Masweu a bolaya a tshega" (white teeth will kill you while laughing)- Do not be cheated by the glitering smilles of Grand Island-They are all false and will kill you if you are not careful.
