I'm truly not a huge fan of Lincoln, or Nebraska at all, but that's just because it's not my sort of place. I'm very much into the alternative scenes and Lincoln just doesn't really have that, places here close early, there isn't much to do that doesn't cost a lot of money or involve getting drunk. I will say that Nebraska has a very nice art scene though. I moved here when I was 16 specifically to attend the Arts and Humanities Focus Program and I had the best time of my life there.

So, I suppose whether or not a person likes a place will depend on what a person is looking for. I mean, a lot of people are saying that Lincoln is safe and I'm sure that it's a great thing(Though I don't particularly find it that safe..Then again I'm from a town with a population of two hundred where no one had to lock their doors at night) but I would rather have more of a nightlife than be safe.

I see a major problem in Lincoln being substance abuse. I'm not talking recreational use, but "I'm bored & don't see very far into the future" kind of use. Besides this there's nothing more than football and teenage pregnancy that I see from the kids in this town. I also don't understand the haughty nature of many of the locals here. They could live in a trailer park (nothing wrong with that. Very smart, actually, considering today's housing market), but because they have a double-wide over the single-wide, they're snobby about it. Very superficial & strange town with stand-offish people & it's not the easiest to make friends here, unless you like sports, sex, and insobriety...

Maybe when you're miserable and in the mood to judge everyone else around you its time to take a look in the mirror! Do you really think its just everyone else around you causing the problem?? If that's the case then the problem is probably YOU!

Truth is I don't know anyone in Lincoln that would care at all that you are a minority. Maybe you need to stop with the unbelievable degree of narcissism and understand people don't really care. If you would recognize that you are not at the center of everyone's thoughts then maybe you could walk through a crowd without THINKING everyone is glaring out you...which I assure you they are not.
I was born and raised in Columbus, Ne, moved to Minnesota, lived there for over 20 years. Now I back living in Lincoln, Ne, husband was relocated for his job. I can tell you I have met allot of people who are Prejudice. I am a white female, and I overhear Prejudice conversations all the time, really makes me sick. People are people, I can not understand how people can judge people by the color of there skin. Very Sad!!!

You think Lincoln is bad, come down the road a piece to North Platte, and you will find a total cesspool here also. Where I live, I have a major drug dealer just one door from me and I have been here 8 years and he's been busted by the feds last December and is still dealing. No one does anything. Its pretty much the same all over the state, and the nation. The country is taking a dump and some of the dump happens to be in Nebraska.
Like someone mentioned, take a loss on the house and go elsewhere. I am planning on doing the same, only moving somewhere else in the state. It may not matter, but its something I have to plan to do. Yes, the taxes are horrid and will get worse, plus everything else.
My suggestion is to just take it one day at a time. and smile and put your game face on, I have to.

I am originally from India. I attended UNL to do MS in agriculture. I stayed near east campus for 4 years. In my 4 years of stay, I never come across drug dealers, pimps, hookers near east campus. Those 4 years are the finest days in my life considering everything. I never come across somebody making racial comments on me. I love to move back to NE at any point of my life without much thought.

I live in a small village just 50 minutes from Lincoln and an hour and a half from Omaha. I love the village life, but I also love Lincoln AND Omaha! THERE IS NO PLACE LIKE NEBRASKA! And, if Governor Heineman gets his way.....we may be in STATE TAX FREE STATE! Wouldn't that be great????!!!!

If you really want to get out this year the real estate market is improving. Prices might not be rising a lot, but a little.
I don't recognize the city you are talking about, but if you are so bugged you can probably get out of it this year and go.

I guess what really disappoints me is I expected people to be friendly and courtious being we are in the midwest. Boy I sure was wrong. Everyone here seems to be angry about something, and they stare at you like some stupid cattle that is being lead into the slaughter house. WHY DON"T YOU DUMB ****"S MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS!!! The thing that really sucks is that I bought a house when I first moved here so now I'm stuck due to the housing market taking a dive. Sorry for the rant, but I would really like to hear from people who feel the same way I do.

In regards to the Compton reference that keeps popping up,as well as the OPs comment on people minding their own business...I had to live for a year&a half or so,in Compton&I never had a problem. In fact,of the places I've lived, people in Compton bothered me less than most places I've lived. They were far more laid back, than I have found in most places&less nosy. As a 'night person',I went out at night to buy my groceries, get snacks from the mini marts, etc.&never had anyone hassle me. Yes,there are shady people there, but also everywhere else in the country. From what I saw, unless you are in a gang,or into drugs or dress like hooker, you really don't have much to worry about. As a decent looking white female who has actually lived there,I can honestly say it was'nt as bad as some claim it is,so I kind of had to LOL a little at the OPs comment about how after dark where he was living 'turned into Compton'. I did'nt see the entire city of Compton, but in that year&a half that I lived there,I never saw one hooker,or drug deal going down,or cops doing anything other than arresting people, for traffic violations. So,I'm guessing the OP has never actually been to Compton&that his comment was just based on the hype.(: BTW,I came upon this post, while looking to get info on moving from where I currently reside,to Nebraska(possibly Lincoln or a smaller town near to it),so if anyone would be willing to share any pros&cons/helpful stories/etc. of doing so,I would be most appreciative. (:
