Moving to Lincoln, Nebraska
Hi everyone, I am moving to Nebraska from Boston, Mass. in June. I just wanted to know some information about the city.
Where are good places to live in Lincoln? I am looking for something that's affordable and safe. I will be working at UNL so something near there would be great.
Is there a public transportation system? I do have a car but I am thinking about selling it so I can have more money for when I get there.
How is the nightlife? I am still very young and I would like to know where the hot spots are in town.

The public transportation system isn't the greatest but it there. I would probably keep the car if I was you. There are lots of nice places to live in Lincoln. Living downtown would be nice, there isn't a ton of options however. I would guess that living in the northern part of Lincoln (up near I-80) would work nice and you could take I-180 right down to the University. There are several Lincoln members who can give you great advice on here!
I see you are also a new member. Welcome! You can do a search and it should come up with previous threads on Lincoln!

Born and raised in Lincoln. If I were you I wouldn't sell the car. The town is large and waiting for the bus is so inconvenient. I had to take the bus to and from school in Junior High every day, but I was just a kid. I didn't have responsibilities, places to be, people to see, etc, etc. All buses connect to a spot downtown, so if you need to get from one part of town to another, you have to take a bus downtown, then catch the next one to the new location. SUCH a pain.
27th and Superior area to 14th and Superior is a good place, or the newer developments near the airport. Or West O.

Welcome to Lincoln! I moved here last fall from the other coast and so far I like it.
You'll need your car, unless you find a place to live where you can walk to everything. There is a bus, but I'm not sure how reliable it is.
The Haymarket is a cool place to go for nightlife. Others can probably chime in more.
I live in an apartment complex just off of 27th St north of Superior St in the north part of Lincoln. It's a very nice, safe area of town with lots of restaurants and shops nearby. My new, large 1 bedroom apartment is less than $600 a month! I couldn't believe how far my money would go, as I'm sure you'll notice coming from Boston.
Like someone else mentioned, the area where I am is great for commuting into downtown Lincoln and the UNL area. Superior St goes to I-180. And it's not far to drive to nightlife either. But there are apartments downtown and close to UNL too, obviously. I can't speak about those though.
I came out here without an apartment lined up. I looked around at a few when I got to town (that I had scouted online) and found what fit me best. Good luck in your move!

The cost of living is definitely cheaper here in Lincoln. I live near 27th & Fletcher in a two-bedroom and a den (996 sq ft) for only $655! I am looking at even cheaper apartments, hopefully a two-bedroom for only $450 or $500!

Thank you everyone for your help!
I have another questions regarding apartments. Are there any places or apartment complexes that I should stay away from?

If you want a safe area, be careful of places around UNL and downtown. South of O street (spanning from 9th to 27th east to west and from O street to A street north to south) can sometimes be alittle hairy. There are good places in that area, but for the most part, I would stay away. There are TONS to college students that live in that area, but there is also quite a bit of crime.
Downtown has quite a variety of bars to go to since the University is just a few blocks away. Just walk down O street (between 17th and 9th) and you'll have plenty of choices.
I would stay away from 27th and O to 27th and Vine (O st is Lincoln's "main" road. It goes east to west. 27th street also cuts all the way through Lincoln but north to south. Vine street is north of O), that area can be alittle scary at night. My husband used to live down there and I was scared s***less to walk around that area. Of course, I am a women, men might not be as scared.
You most likely will definitely want to keep your car. Lincoln is not easy getting around in by public transportation only. Our buses stop running after 6 or 7 (I think) for the most part. And I'm pretty sure they don't run on Sunday's (I forget about Saturday's.)
I've lived here in whole life, so I will try to help you where I can. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask!

Does anyone have any ideas on corporate housing? What do people do for 4 month stays? How about just a summer job/work for myself? Best place to look for summer employment? Would anyone know? Im executive level but have no problem doing anything.
Im arriving with my fiance for just the summer as he is working there temporarily. Keeping a 2nd rent in So. Cal would be a disaster so Im hoppin along for the ride. As a side question...my family lives in Colorado...anyone do a drive from Lincoln to Colorado? Just wondering if a single female driving is safe in that area. ( It isnt in So. cal). Thank you all for your help.

Qsnoodle,
From Lincoln, Nebraska to Denver is almost 450 miles via I-80 and I-76. The west edge of Lincoln is at about the 395 mile marker on I-80. You switch over to I-76 at mile 103 which is just out of Julesberg, Colorado. It is then about 150 miles to Denver on I-76. It is about as safe as it can get but you still need to be careful in Rest Areas and other potentially hazardous places. Sadly there are degenerates everywhere but probably a lot less in this area than almost anywhere.
The Interstate routes are fast and safe but if you want to take your time and enjoy the trip try taking Highway 6 West out of Lincoln and going into Colorado on Highway 6 or Highway 34 which splits from Hwy 6 just West of McCook. This is a lot more scenic than the Interstates and you will meet REAL people in the small towns along the way.
Renting a nice house in the summer months in Lincoln can be done. A lot of students live off campus and either rent or buy a home. Usually during the summer they will continue paying rent even if they leave for the summer because of the hassle of finding a living place every year. Placing an advertisement in the DAILY NEBRASKAN and checking their online website a few months before you move would be a good idea. You might be able to negotiate something with a part time resident. Rent in Lincoln is still decent compared to the Coasts. You can find nice apartments for $500 and up and a decent two or three bedroom home for $800 on up.
Good Luck,
GL2

As a young female I can say it is very safe to drive alone from CO to Lincoln. I drove alone with my 2 babies. Everything went fine. If its not snowy/icy it is a really easy drive.
