OMG!!! Geography IS important!!
Yesterday I was very busy at work and the phone rang (again!). The bouncy male voice on the other end of the phone said, "Good afternoon, we are calling all of the schools in New England to offer them an exciting new opportunity to be affiliated with the Discovery Channel!"
I said, "Son, since when is Nebraska located in New England?"
"Um-ah-Nebraska?"
"Young man, the abbreviation 'NE' stands for NEBRASKA. There IS no state called - New England. It is an area, not a state."
"Oh! I didn't know that! I'm so sorry - my bad. Thank you for telling me."
Anyone else figure out that this was a sales scam - that got completely knocked off track by the caller's ignorance?
This is probably one of those people who insists that there are 52 states, too...
Oh, well, I had fun not only kicking the scam to the curb but explaining geography to the ignorant...

Wow! I have gotten the "where is Nebraska" comment or "is Nebraska a state comment" before...but never the "New England" is a state comment.

Reminds me of the telephone order clerk who very politely declined to take an order for a purchase because the company did not ship "outside the USA"....the caller was wanting the package shipped to New Mexico.

Checking into a motel in North Carolina here recently, I had abbreviated Nebraska also. The motel clerk, asked what part of New England are you from?
It has been years ago now, we had guests at the ranch from eastern US. We were going over some of the things to be careful for when hiking and camping around the ranch. When finished with the orientation, I asked if there were any questions. A young woman in her late 20's raised her hand and asked, "Should would be watchful of indian attacks?" Stunned some at first, I replied to her, "Only if you see smoke signals first."

I placed a phone order a few years ago and stated I'd need it shipped to Wyoming.
*Long pause*
"That's in Colorado, right?"
