Is it legal to take artifacts? Just asking because I don't know.

Depends..... on most, if not all gov't owned land, artifacts must be left in place. Also, depends on the estimated age of the particular artifact. Newer stuff that can be traced to a particular tribe are considered the property of that tribe. Older stuff (Paleo, et al) cannot be traced to a modern time tribe.

If you are on public property, you need to check the regulations governing that particular property. On most, if not all, state and federal lands you are prohibited from digging and any finds must be turned in.
Is that law followed? Hardly. For example I know people who arrowhead hunt on the beaches of Lake McConaughy. They are quite successful and keep every one they find. However, since it in a state park, they are supposed to turn them in.

Make sure you have the right to dig on the land for artifacts. If you find an arrowhead in your backyard of your own property then you're legally OK. However, even though it is prohibited to dig on public land, you can propose your reasoning for an archaeological dig to your local govern
