grand island not so grand, or an island either...
on a recent road trip through nebraska, i pulled in to grand island to grab a motel room for the night. granted this may not show the town in it's best light, but my impression was a town full of hooligans, people dressed like slobs and no one can turn a corner or pull out of a parking lot in their old beaters without plenty of tire squealing. i did not feel comfortable there at all. i checked into a motel, the staff were unkempt and sloppy, and the room was disgusting. it stunk and was filthy and i went and got my money back.. no thanks grand island, i'm pushing on to kearney. in contrast, kearney seemed like a great place. i also liked papillon (outside omaha) and ogallala. great old western town.

You must have picked a bad motel. Grand Island is big enough there should be a good variety to chose from.

bad motel
that's true, the motel wasn't my first choice but there was a fireman's convention going on at the time and they had grabbed up the nicer ones...

Just like any other town, it has its good and bad parts. You must have stayed somewhere close to downtown or on south Locust.
If you had been on the west side of out town by the Mall and all the retail development, you probably would have a different opinion.

Yep nothing shows off a city's good side like a Sam's Club and an Applebee's
Ha...sorry GI you're just not quite up there with the top cities in the state. Although I LOVE Stuhr Museum, because I'm a nerd. But other than that GI is not that great. The State fair coming to town will be a good adddition and it should feel more "at home" there.

Well, at least there are no roaming thugs there!
All the nice residential is on the west side of town too.
I'm not from GI, but my wife grew up there. She was raised near 5th and Kimball near Lion's Club Park. That is a scary neighborhood (by central Nebraska standards anyway...) nowadays.
