How did you come across your "information" there dsrich98?
All schools around Lincoln have troubled students, but North Star is CERTAINLY not the worst. I would say, when it comes to "troubled" kids, Lincoln High takes the cake. When my children are high school age, I have three tops schools: North East, then North Star, then South East.
I graduated from North Star and it's a pretty good school. It's pretty big though, with about 2000 kids every year.
I've lived in Lincoln my whole life, and all the high schools are pretty similar in what they teach and how they teach it. LPS isn't nearly as
strong of a school system as Norris is. So, I would definitely look into that school.
Good luck!!

It was statistics, they're pretty pesky. Unfortunatley I don't have link to refer you to, they were available to me from my time working in youth social services.

Thanks for the additional info. I'm not sure what you mean when you say that LPS doesn't have as strong of a system as Norris. In what way -- academically, socially, etc.?
Also, why would you put North East at the top over South East? And what about Lincoln East?
Thanks.

Also, going back to Norris High School and its comparison with LPS high schools, it seems like the LPS schools offer a lot more types of classes than Norris High School (unless their web site is only showing certain classes?). So even if it is a better district, can a comparison really be made between the high schools as far as classes, or is it more of an apples and oranges type of thing?

A great alternative to large Lincoln schools
Our family has experienced public schools in both Waverly and Lincoln, as well as several private schools. We have found the best situation at Prairie Hills Learning Center on Hwy 77, in Roca, which is Montessori. It's part of the Norris School District. We commute from east Lincoln, and it only takes 20 minutes to get there--totally worth the drive. The school goes to middle school level, and it basically a country school-like atmosphere with all sorts of animals for the kids to take care of. They have their own organic garden and prepare their own vegitarian meals. The school is off the grid much of the day with passive and active solar, and also has a wind-generated turbine. All-in-all a great education! But you asked for advice on high schools...
As far as high schools are concerned, check out the LPS Zoo School, located at the Folsom Zoo. It's small school of 70 students that focuses on the Arts and Sciences. Students enjoy an environment of self-guided learning on the Lincoln Folsom Zoo Campus. It's casual without peer pressure, and the kids are motivated by exploring their own intersts.
There are also three other focus schools in the LPS system. One focuses on Arts and Humanitites, one is computer and tech oriented, and the last one focuses on business and entreprenurial skills.
Go to the LPS website to learn more. We have been extremely pleased with this direction of learning.
Good luck.

Not sure about all the classes offered at Norris and LPS high school levels. My oldest is only going into 2nd grade. Just going on yearly test scores posted in newspaper, and word of mouth from other parents with high school aged children. When living in Lincoln, I never heard anything, weekly, monthly or anything about what is going on with the schools or stuff like that, untill there is something in the newspaper about them closing a school or adding portable buildings because they didnt see the growth coming (how about looking at the new subdivisions being built right around the school) to ease overcrowding. In the Norris school district, monthly we have a news letter mailed out to all residents, with info from the Super, High School, Middle and Elementary Principals and Vice-Principals. So we get to see what their plans are to handle growth and the like. It also has general school info for all levels, (sports, music, drama...etc.).I just feel like they are more in tune with what is happening around them and not like LPS with their heads stuck in the sand. I actually was looking at new houses in Lincoln, before building in Hickman, that backed right up to an elementary school playground, but was told by the realtor that we were not able to send our kids to that school because of overcrowding. This was in a brand new large neighborhood being built, for far too long LPS has let families from other neighborhoods, send their kids out of their immediate school district to more desirable schools, with no regards to demand of future growth of that school. Sorry for the rant, good luck on school choices, again I'm not sure about all classes offered, I'm sure they must be pretty compariable, or the demand to have the same classes would be there.

dsrich98 - I reread my post and it came off sounding REALLY bi***y. Sorry, that wasn't my intention. I just get kind of defensive about that school b/c it has a weird rep that it doesn't deserve.
Happygirl - Norris has a MAJOR rep around here for being one of the top systems in the state. And, from what I've seen, LPS just doesn't hold up. That's why so many city people are moving out that way.
I put Northeast over every other school because I went there for 3 years. It's one of the most diverse, socially and economically. It's a "middle class" school that I just feel more comfortable with.
It's mostly a comfort thing with me. I grew up middle class and that's what I'm used to and comfortable with. Southeast has quite a few Country Club kids that go there that I just wouldn't feel right around. Though it has ALOT of middle and lower class kids, and it's one of the best high schools in Lincoln athletically, it's just not as familiar TO ME as Northeast or North Star.
East was the "rich" school until Southwest came along. It still is. My husband went there and loved it, but I've known alot of people that HATED how stuck up the kids were. Though, their band program scores high marks year after year.
It's more of a personal preference then because one school is better than the other.
It IS apples and oranges. Norris is so much better academically, it puts LPS to shame. But LPS has the diversity of people and classes.
Good luck!! And remember this is just one persons opinion!
