Default Where to rent Cottage or Vacation Home?

Hi,

We're looking to rent a cottage, cabin or house somewhere in Nebraska, ideally located along a river, lake or in a small town.

We love "off the beaten trail", old historical towns, areas that are authentic, not turistic or contrived as cutsy, and secluded. Can anyone recommend areas and websites where to track down accomodations? Oddly, I cant find anything when searching (for "vacation houses nebraska", etc).

Thanks! Steve

We also enjoy staying at vacation homes when we travel! The only one I have even seen in Nebraska is at Crofton, by the Lewis and Clark Lake area. If you look at the HomeAway site, you can check it out. The second listing on their site for Nebraska must be someone's idea of a joke?
We've always booked thru the vrbo.com site and have never had any problems. Of course, they don't have any properties in Nebraska. Happy travels!

You might enjoy Brownville, NE. There are guest houses for rent, there. It is, in my opinion, a really interesting little town. Was, at one time, up and coming, but a bond issue passed for a (railway???) or something that could not be paid. So, about 10,000 people moved out, leaving these fabulous, old houses.

It was a Riverboat town along the Missouri. When I was there, I had the most fun peaking around. People from Lincoln and Omaha have come down and purchased and restored some of the houses. Whiskey Run Creek winery is there and it is special. A dinner theatre. An old riverboat and landing. And, when I was there, someone was creating a 'rare books' store.

However, there is more hype over how MUCH is there than is there. But, it really IS an interesting place.

Must be a website. ???
