We used a moving company for the 1st time in our lives when we moved TO Nebraska from SC; Uhaul was impractical for moving over 13,000 lbs of housewares, over 1700 miles, with a disabled hubby. Allied came in, did a binding estimate that held them to a price (they severely underestimated, as they found out later when they weighed the truck!), and we could set our delivery date out a little to accommodate our time frame. We were in daily touch with the driver, they came in, packed everything, loaded everything, and unloaded at the NE house on the date we said, even putting things in the shops, garage, upstairs and in the basement - all for the stated price. If there had been any problems, Allied even has storage in major cities where you can pay to have your goods stored for a month or more if there are problems.
My daughter moved from SC to Las Vegas and went with a 'national' company we had never heard of (she found them on the Internet). They told her what date they would deliver (and actually delivered it 1 day prior, which could have been a hassle if there weren't friends there). They also were a day late to load, had underestimated HER freight weight - and tried to demand the difference when they got to Vegas, refusing to unload unless her friends paid the difference! (No she didn't pay the upcharge.) So keep your paperwork in order, make sure it is a binding estimate before they ever come out to load the truck, and have the main office on your cel-phone speed dial for any problems en route or afterwards.
