Just a heads up ---- Sen Nelson is doing his monthly call in show today at 2pm central time on KFAB (I think, its 1290 AM).

I don't think I'll try calling in - but listening is going to be rather..exciting!

Dang, I missed it. Did you listen? If so, can you tell us how it went? What were people saying to him? How did he react?

There were a lot of people who thanked him and thought he did the right thing. They seemed geniune and although I don't agree with them I can't fault them for their beliefs. I do fault a caller named 'erica' who said that this bill was the 'christian thing to do' --- this is not a theocracy and to my way of thinking law shouldn't be based on one persons interpretation of the bible or the koran or anything more then the ten commandments.

There were a lot of people who did ask tough questions - which I prefer to a love fest.

Basically Nelson said that the deal with NE not having to pay for the medicare componant had nothing to do with the health care vote. In fact, it was purely coincidental that the two things came out at the same time.....I doubt this, but he repeated it numerous times to numerous callers.

He also said that he felt it was better to have voted they way he did when he did else the vote would be subject to certain house rules whereby it would only need something like 40 votes to pass instead of 60.

He said that 'we had read the bill'. Unfortunately noone asked him to clarify 'we' -- I still wonder if he personally read the bill or did his staff read it and then give him a summation.

Overall I came away with the impression that Nelson believes that this is the best thing for NE and for the country. He seemed very for it - much more so then he did in the weeks building up to the vote.

When people asked for specifics, he couldn't answer them. There was a lot of 'I believes' in his responses. When one caller called him on that he admitted that what is written can change and that he really doesn't know how it will all come out. He also dodged a question on whether or not it was fair that government employees (including Nelson) are not subject to the health care bill. He said something to the effect that maybe his adult children would benefit from the health care reform even though he wouldn't be a part of it. He also said that this will not raise taxes or premiums. In fact he stated that even if it did raise premiums, our rates would 'probably go up anyway due to the uninsured' so either way we would be paying more so why not pay more to help more people.

In the end I came away with the impression that Nelson is 100% for health care reform, believes that the special deal NE got will not only be honored but that all states will receive the same benefit as well.

Cuncuu,
If you go to KFAB.com they may have the segment with Ben Nelson archived. You can listen to them 24/7 online. You have to have Quicktime on your computer but everything you need can be downloaded directly from their website. BTW KFAB is on the AM dial at 1110. 1290 is another Omaha station.
