Jeez, if it's that easy, I might have to get a tag, too! Thanks for all the info- we're heading that way next week!

If you are going there you might want to find a Wal-Mart. Go to the sporting goods area and ask them for the guide book to public hunting land. It has all of the areas and the CPR crop areas that are open to public hunting. Also something else that you might want to look into is at each county court house you can go to the County Clerk and see if they have some county plat map books. These will tell you who owns the land and has telephone numbers so that you can call them. These little books are a great piece of information about a county. The county seats for each county is; Johnson - Tecumseh; Pawnee - Pawnee City; Nemaha - Auburn; Richardson - Falls City; Gage - Beatrice. Happy hunting for me you can have two or more tags as it will mean less deer for me to dodge.

We might have to buy another deep freezer, sounds like! Where we're from in WA State, the hunting is a joke. He'll be a happy man in NE! Thanks for all the helpful info- will pass it along to him. Any tornados out there lately? I am excited/nervous about my first experience with one- can't wait to exaagerate the story for our friends and family back home, ha ha!

I was actually online reading about the "Night of the Twister" in G.I. and came across some info about tornadoes in Nebraska. According to their statistics tornadoes are not very common in Lancaster county, which is good news for you. I guess I grew up right next to where they are most predominant(Grand Island), so hopefully that sets your mind at ease.

Yes we have tornadoes here but unless they hit something like Grand Island, Lincoln, Omaha or one of our other major cites it never appears on the news. We also are still working on the cattle in western Nebraska trying to get them to start reporting the tornadoes that they see as well. We are having problems with this and we are looking for a new teacher. Want the job? Just kidding. You will learn to watch the clouds like most of us in Nebraska do now. You will learn when to take cover by watching. Also never never try to out run a tornado as you can't. Watch the tornado if you can to see which way it is going then move away from it as fast as you can. If you can't take cover in a ditch and if you can get into a drainage tube even if you have to get muddy, but get out as fast as you can after the tornado passes over as you could be in a flash flood in minutes after it goes by from all of the rain.

Yeah, the tornado thing has me fascinated. I talked with an old timer who lives near Hickman, and he had all kinds of stories for me. I also heard about the doozy from three years ago- I was just glad to hear no one was hurt.
Well, we'll do our homework and prepare the kids just in case. I'm guessing you folks do tornado drills in your schools pretty frequently? Won't that be a story for the folks back home!
I can still remember the screen door shaking and the rumbling when Mt. St. Helens blew- I'm guessing sooner or later I'll have a tornado story for my grandkids, too!

Well, your prime time to see tornadoes here is slowly fading away. While one can develop at any time, our primary season ends this month (June). But we can still have some window rattling storms for the rest of the summer. I have a cousin from Seattle visit in the summer one year. This was the first time he had been to the mid west, we had a severe thunder storm, and he freaked out.
Also, if you don't mind, what kind of job does your husband have that would bring him to our life of leisure?

He's another darn railroad worker .
As for the thunderstorms, we also lived in Arizona during monsoon season, so the thunderstorm thing isn't new to us! I'm hoping to see a tornado at some point; preferably from a far distance away!

Eagle Raceway is an awesome place. It's just a hop-skip-and a jump away from Lincoln going East.
I went there all the time with my parents when I was growing up. Haven't been there in about 4 years though! I should go back there sometime soon!

Yeah, he mentioned that one. He went to the races at Beatrice, and then hit some track in Omaha last weekend. I'll tell him to hit Eagle this weekend. Life sure is rough for him- he gets to go to the races while I pack up the house and deal with our three kids! He owes me big time, ha ha. I'm thinking I'll get a sitter this weekend and say goodbye down at our track here- I need a break!
