Wouldn't bet on a boom, every one that comes in knocks one local out.

To me, Alliance is a very bleak town. I don't mean that in a demeaning way, the panhandle in general is a very bleak place (and that's why I love it) Over the years I've passed through Alliance many times and It always seems...dead; Which is odd for a town of 9,000 people. Maybe Alliance just decides to shut down every time I come through.
I do have a friend who moved there from Junction city, KS with his family and he loves it. He bought a 4 bedroom home for $119,000, and that's usually enough to get anyone to consider a move there. But like others previously stated Alliance is definitely lacking in amenities. Which is also odd for a town of 9,000 people.

I LOVE Alliance. We have lived here 2 years. We live within walking distance to the park, library, schools, colleges, pool and the theater. We have been around the world and traveled all over the U.S. , had our share of fun & excitiement. Now my husband and I are enjoying the simpler things. Alliance has no traffic, crime or crowds but instead is filled with friendly, smiling people that greet you. My husband's family is from here. He works as a manager at BNSF & LOVES his job. I am attending school for my bachelors and my masters degree to be able to teach at the college level. I found our rental homes driving up and down the streets of Alliance looking for rental signs. I found two fantastic rentals this way. Our first rental was too small for us so we looked for a bigger home. Currently we rent a lovely 5 bedroom home with 2 baths. ALSO If you look on the boards at BNSF, the paper (which is online) & contact the realtors they will send you list of homes available monthly. If you are moving to Alliance. W E L C O M E ! If you don't mind short drives every now and then to Scottsbluff or Rapid City you will be happy here.Negatives: Alliance needs more restaurant choices and shopping choices. I also wish there was a fresh farmers market here. : (

Alliance is a great town to live in. It is a small town with the type of amenities that you find in small towns. It doesn't have a Wal-mart or many Chain resturants. It has great parks, a library, two museums, an art center, great high school and little league sports, and is close enough to get whereever you need to go in a reasonable amount of time.
There is no traffic, cost of living is very reasonable, and you can ride a bike or walk just about everywhere. It is safe enough to send your kids on their bikes to the local playground, of which there are plenty. There is a 5 plex cinema which shows first run movies and has the same popcorn you would get at the show in Denver. There are great churches, plenty of organizations to get involved with and enough special events to enjoy if you want to try to get involved.
You won't find concerts, Broadway shows, or megashopping. But if the smell of a backyard steak causes you to talk to your neighbor, you might find you talking the night away over a couple of beers. Where you live is largely about what you make it. Alliance is largely like that. If you decide to come here for work but want what you had in the suburbs, you will be very unhappy. If you come here to work and decide to enjoy what Alliance has to offer, you will be pleasantly surprised.
The BBDC (Box Butte Development Corproation) has a relocation service to welcome people to town and to help them figure out how to settle in. They also have a relocation guide which will help you find all the things in town that you need to know about. Call them if you have questions at 762-1800. We will welcome you!

Why do you expect a boom in a bust economy
We are running just about the same number of trains in and out of here as we always have. The problem is the conductors agreed to system wide seniority and so they are bumping in here to keep a job. They don't want to be here -- they want to be home -- where there are no jobs. Instead of appreciating the fact that we still have trains running. They moan and groan and complain about being here. They could stay home and accept the furlough. Instead they bump in here, lay a local off, and then run down the town. How is that fair? We are what we are -- and that is NOT Fort Worth, St. Louis, Kansas City, or even Gillette. It is not our fault the railroad and the unions have the system they have -- why take it out on the community?

I'm a western Nebraska girl. I love it out here. The years I was there, I loved living in the panhandle. I currently live 30 miles from a town big enough to support a gas station.
That said, i think Alliance is rather...hmmm...
Seedy?
I guess that's what I'd say. For as large of a town as it is (and 9,000 is big for western Nebraska) it feels more like a town of 2,000. That's dying...
I can't help comparing it to McCook. A town of a similar size that just has far more of a "growth" feel to it.
