Lovelock is all Alfa-Alfa some wheat,if gardening is in the humbolt ranch estates I would not know why soil would be so different from the clay soils we have in Lovelock valley, excellent for growing Alfa Alfa (just loves water and heat)
The reason it's grown here in the desert has to do with harvesting being able to fast dry it on the fields with out risking rain that would leach out the nutrients.
molding bales of hay does not sell.
As long as you do not set out plants seedlings prior to may 1st and provide
some home made shade for them until they get used to the sun I just stuck with marigolds and Alfa alfa.
Poppies grow nicely to.
Mums love the sandy soil or you can plant them in
crushed rocks they love it. Tomatoes and peppers grow well.
But normal things like apple trees i would just not even try I grew some award winning cabbage in my horse manure...supposed to be a cold weather plant but I also harvested early. Some people grow corn mine was scraggly..
To me the weather is uncomfortable. 90+ June July august half of September
cold December January March half of April.
Only leaves October,September and May for months you feel comfortable outside.
3 months out of the year
But you can build a huge house and have a lovely view if one likes to cross stitch nit crochet or do fine wood work indoors looking out it's inexpensive
and few cloudy gloomy days.

I would advise anyone who is considering retiring into the far-flung reaches of Nevada to consider where they will go (and how long it takes) for their health care issues. I am only about 70 miles out of Reno but for my mother's health issues and my own we are driving sometimes 5-6 times a month to Reno. A helicopter will come and get you in an emergency, but otherwise you will be driving long distances and it does make for a long day.

General hospital nursing home and more
With gold prices over $900/ounce Lovelock will soon be a great place if your old
or if you like to work for the mines you can make a great living here and
save to.
Waiting times at the local hospital is none you see a doctor right away.
There are two nursing homes in town many people drive here from surrounding areas because of it I also know old people that relocated here for that reason.

We are retiring in the Lovelock area out at Rocky Canyon we will be there by fall of this year. I've been told that heart victims in Winnemucca are sent to Lovelock for care. I realize that I will be 25 miles the closest hospital but I believe I can handle that with 75 mile an hour speed limits. We fell in love with Lovelock we like the idea of being out in the middle of now where but we are in a great wide open subdivision, the folks in Lovelock have all been very pleasant and we look forward to our extended stay there,

Are you stuck because you want to be there and don't want anybody else to move there or are you truely stuck as in no funds to get out?
I can't imagine being anywhere and feeling stuck but then I have the fortitude to get myself out of a situtation I'm not happy with.
Good luck to you, if you want to leave just leave the road goes several ways from there.

We here in Lyon County have a hospital as well, with visiting dr.'s. My mom lives not a block away. Sure, she walks in all of the time if she needs a blood pressure check or lab work. She has had 4 bypasses, has a recalled defibrillator and other medical problems. What I am saying is that if you need special medical care you are going to have to travel. I'm not even sure if this hospital delivers babies anymore.

I grew up in several towns in Nevada, Lovelock is where I spent the longest amount of time. Not a fun place for kids, however, some of the retirees seem to enjoy it. My best friend's grandmother has the best garden in Lovelock. The closest shopping or anything is Reno, which 90 miles to the west.

Although there is shopping malls growing in Fernly, a Super Wal-Mart in winnemucca and another in Fernly along with a Home Depot. I like the mom and pop stores in Fallon. I don't see much shopping going on in Lovelock itself except for emergency foods, Reno is so busy with people I think that I will continue to shop in the smaller towns.

Lovelock is nice town to retire to,but hard to find work in.Most jobs only pay around 7.00/hr.lots of folks work two or more jobs to make ends meet.At this time of year,RyePatch water level is low til snow melt comes down from the north.Alfalfa grows good in the alkali soil here.Alfalfa seed used to be a boomig crop yrs ago.I lived here in the early 80's and the town is less now than back then.Safeway is the only grocery store, lots of the stores on main street are closed/boarded up.there is a feed store, but they main owners in Fallon never bring over what it ordered-the only good thing about the feed store is you an get some pants and shirts there.otherwise it is 60+ miles to Fallon or Fernley or 70+ miles to Winnemucca for clothing, toys, feed, groceries, furniture etc.or 90+ miles to Sparks/Reno.There is is more housing built now than thirty yrs ago,but less businesses it seems, alot are gone or closed. It is hard to live on 7.00/hr,and pay 500-900.00/mo rent/utilities etc.especially for a single person. As far as the mining,Florida canyon(out by humboldt river ranch) is doing good, but the others in town are at a standstill sort of.It is a nice place to retire if you don't have to have a high income need to survive. It is a nice quiet town, not much for the kids in summertime. The heat is not too bad due to low humidity.I was told a saying by one of the workers at Workmans Nursery in Fallon pertaining to planting trees/gardens.."prepare a million dollar hole for hundred dollar tree."I love the area and the state, but I'm looking for a job elsewhere for now, maybe I'll retire back here...who knows....best of luck....
