Ok please forgive my ignorance of the reno area in advance but i just have a couple questions. I was looking on mapquest and it said that reno is 50 miles from lake tahoe but it said the driving time was 2+ hours, could someone explain to me how this is? Also is lake tahoe kind of like a suburb of the reno area or is it pretty far out there by itself? Next i would like to know what the "real"(i like to drive faster than the speed limit) driving time is between las vegas and reno and what are the speed limits on the highways in nevada usually? I'd also like to know the real driving time between reno and san francisco too if anyone knows and the speed limit as well? Finally could someone please tell me how the casinos in the reno/lake tahoe area differ if at all from the casinos in vegas? I'm particularly interested in if the sports books, table games and eating options in the reno area casinos are on par with the vegas casinos? Thanks for your help.

Winding mountain roads, and or Carson City traffic.

Lake Tahoe, is a large lake, the part you saw that said 50 miles is South Lake, On the north shore is Incline Village, far less than 50 miles, either are 2,000 feet higher than Reno, and in an entirely different biome and culture, and weather.

Next i would like to know what the "real"(i like to drive faster than the speed limit) driving time is between las vegas and reno and what are the speed limits on the highways in nevada usually?

Look at the mileage, divide by 65, you got it. The Nevada Highway Patrol has their haunts, but unless you drive the road frequently you won't know where they are. It is a two lane road, and it kills plenty of people each year, Ambulance response time can be up to an hour, or more in some places.

I'd also like to know the real driving time between reno and san francisco too if anyone knows and the speed limit as well?

California Highway Patrol does an even better job of nailing the downhill traffic, driving time to SF will be about 5 hours. Speed limit is normally 65, you will climb a 7,000 foot pass, then have 60 miles of downhill to Sac.

Finally could someone please tell me how the casinos in the reno/lake tahoe area differ if at all from the casinos in vegas? I'm particularly interested in if the sports books, table games and eating options in the reno area casinos are on par with the vegas casinos? Thanks for your help.

The casinos did not build those fancy buildings by handing out money, save yourself money and time, and only enter a casino for a show or to eat
.

Thanks clarks for the help. I didn't realize that the area around lake tahoe was so mountainous d'oh, but that explains it. Can anyone further comment on my last question about how the casinos in the reno/tahoe area compare to the ones in vegas? Will i be able to do everything i could in vegas in reno? Basically i want to know if i can still bet on a wide variety of sports, play poker at a table and not have to wait forever and swim in pool with a bar and enjoy a buffet or a nice dinner at a restaurant. Will i be satisfied in the reno/tahoe area or will the casinos disappoint me and make me wish i was in vegas? Thanks again.

If you are a casino person, and not a bicyclist, motorcyclist, skier, boater, rock climber, hiker, equestrian, stay in Las Vegas. Reno is a great city for outdoor sports, vegas is a great city to help the casinos build bigger and fancier casinos.

If you are expecting Reno to be a smaller version of Las Vegas, you WILL BE disappointed. There are some shows but not every night of the week. There are few of the spectacles that Las Vegas is known for.

There are a lot more oudoor activities and great drives in the Reno- Lake Tahoe - Carson City areas.

You'll find everything in Reno - all the games, buffets, shows, restaurants, etc. - that you will find in Vegas. I'm not sure about a pool with a bar. Reno is like Vegas, except on a smaller scale and not as crowded as Vegas.

I am all of those things i'm a big time outdoorsman and sport type that also enjoys to play a little poker once in a while and place a bet on a sports team that i like. I'm not too concerned really about all of the tourist type stuff there is in vegas like the shows and all that's why i had this image in my mind of reno being the best of both worlds. All of the outdoor activities but still enough of the gaming options to satisfy what i want. Unless i'm reading the replies wrong i think reno sounds perfect for what i imagine it to be.

A casino is a casino is a casino, whether in Reno, Las Vegas, or the Bahamas. The difference is that Las Vegas has mega-resorts that you won't find in Reno, but not all Las Vegas hotel/casinos are mega-resorts. Reno has some really nice hotel/casinos that are really no different from Vegas. It's just a matter of size and visitor volume. Reno is just not as large, so has fewer casinos. It really compares more with downtown Las Vegas. Nothing in this world compares with The Strip. Same thing at South Lake Tahoe.

But Reno/Tahoe is great for outdoors activities. Las Vegas has plenty of that too, with Lake Mead, and the Spring Mountains, etc., but not on a par with Reno/Tahoe.

I can't imagine it taking 2 hours to get up the hill to Lake Tahoe, but once there you might have another hour of driving depending on what part of the lake you're headed for. There are several towns surrounding Lake Tahoe, and traffic is horrible. 99.9% of the casinos are at the town of South Lake Tahoe. In winter it could take hours and hours to get there.

The drive from Reno to Las Vegas is 440 miles, and you will want to start full and stop for gas in Tonopah which is roughly half way. There are almost no gas stations otherwise. Remember, Nevada is 87% controlled by the BLM, so it is mostly Open Range. That means the cows frequently wonder out on the highway, especially just north of Tonopah. I drive fast, and my best time between Las Vegas and Reno was about 7 hours. When I drive normally, and stop for gas and food, it takes about 9 hours. The speed limit is 70mph most of the way. The highway is one lane in each direction almost the entire trip.
