Anyways where would be a good place to do a little fishing in and around the Vegas area?

Thanks, Mike.
Except for Lake Mead most serious fishing around here is for trout. And by "around here" it means doing some driving. Lake Mead is mostly good for striped bass. It helps to have a boat because the best way to fish for them is to watch for the "boiling" on the water when they go after the shad and get there as fast as you can because it doesn't last long. The pros that fish out there have fast boats and use binoculars to watch for the feeding frenzy. You can also go out to a cove about sunup and catch them chasing the shad in towards the shoreline. But some people just sit on the beach, throw in a line and wait. In the summer it's good to sit out there all night and snooze while you fish.

You can fish the river below the dam and catch both stripers and trout, or you can go on down river to Lake Mojave. I believe there are catfish in those lakes, as well as bass but most people are after the stripers. Up at Overton Landing on the north end of Lake Mead used to be good crappie fishing, especially at night. I don't know if it is still good or not. They closed the marina up there and I'm not sure if you can still put a boat in or not. At most of the marinas I believe you can rent boats, as well as at Cottonwood Cove on the Arizona side of the river (across the dam towards Kingman, AZ).

You need to get an Arizona stamp on your Nevada fishing license to fish the lakes on the Colorado, or the river itself, as well as a trout stamp if you plan to fish for trout.

There are several small impounds north of here both in Nevada and in Utah for trout. They are mostly from three to six hours away by car. Most, if not all, have camping available. Otherwise you are stuck with the three city park ponds. The best is Floyd Lamb Park at Tule Springs where there are five ponds that they stock with mostly catfish, but also some trout and bass. Boulder City also has a couple of ponds for fishing.

Default Hi Indy!

Thanks Indy. It's good hearing from you. I enjoyed my time in the Missouri forum. They're a good group of folks there, especially MoMark. That was a loss.

. . . and yes, we left the area. I really like the hills and the neighbors we met. However, my wife started freaking out at about the third consecutive weekend of Tornado Warnings. I found her walking around with the NOAA radios in hand, all of the time.

After that issue and then finding high radon levels in every house we considered, we felt it was time to head back to the West. We'll just have to visit the Missouri hills rather than be residents. That's why we ended up in the Eastern Sierra Nevada (Northern Nevada), just down from Lake Tahoe. It's worked for us.

Thanks again for saying, "hi."

I know this thread has been dead for awhile but I fish around Vegas. Depending on time of year, Lake Mead can be excellent. Largemouth Bass fishing is pretty good and good size Smallmouth are showing up more and more often. Striper fishing is good all year and excellent in fall and winter. I've fished Floyd Lamb Park up on the north side of Vegas and found largemouth fishing to be pretty good, though the bass are mostly small. A few pretty good sized bass up to 10 lbs have come out of there, though I have yet to catch one of those. My largest is a 1 pounder. Fishing around Vegas can be really, really good depending on time of year, weather, knowledge of the water you want to fish, and technique.
