First I want to tell you that I did live in a small town here in Oregon where fishing on the river was done by gill boats and nets ..therefore most of the people were intertwined togeather some how by this industry .So, if you wern't a fisherman or had a part in the industry ,,then you were left to listen when around others at gatherings like church , pool halls , school events ,,at the local gas station,,ect, ect ,ect .. you get the point by now I hope. By the way I did commrcial fish ,,I gill netted for Salmon like others and so I fit in and knew what everyone was talking about ..

My question to you is this.. Is Golf just about all I would hear ,, in Mesquite is "Golf" ,,as I read it in most all postings in favor of this city..

I like Golf ,,have nothing against it ,,and I am not saying I wouldn't move to Mesquite because of golf ..just curious what you all will reply with..

Lawrence..

We live in Mesquite, on a golf course, because we wanted to see green and not have to water it, rarely golf, and see a lot of golf tourists when we go out to the restaurants. I think you may hear casino more than golf.....

Most seem to gravitate toward either (fill in blank) versus (fill in blank) social affiliations, and obsess about how "the others" are conspiring against them.

That's interesting....I never associated Mesquite=golf before...but, being that it is a large retirement community....it does make sense.

Well, recently, all the residents in town were undoubtedly talking about the murder-suicide of a prominent city councilwoman/mayoral candidate and her husband. But political controversies in Mesquite have been in the forefront of a lot of "talk of the town" for decades. All towns have their political controversies but Mesquite just seems to always have more, IMO. The suicide has been attributed to political implications.

But no, golf is not the center of conversations amongst residents, in my opinion. There are lots of things other than golf that are of interest. It has a very prominent skydiving community. The fine arts center is very active and pronounced in the community. Geocaching is quickly gaining popularity. Running is popular and there is an annual Mesquite marathon. Recreational ATVing has always been popular.

I could go on but, no, I don't believe that the primary topic you hear about around town is only golf although Mesquite has more golf courses than almost any town its size. It was once dubbed the future Palm Springs of Nevada by the CoC and real estate agents in town.

As jfitt mentioned, although many residents golf, I think its courses and their marketing is primarily aimed at visitors.

Funny thing is ,,the marketing for Mesquite is a whole lot about the nice golf courses it has ,,but what I am hearing here is that visitors make up the most of the playing on the greens ..which makes me ask ,,where are the visitors coming from and how far in miles do they travel ? No matter how far or from I guess as it's sure good for Mesquite commerce .. just chatting now with ya ,,always nice to share thoughts even though sometimes elementary ones.. LOL
Have a nice weekend and hope all get to and from the super bowl ok .. Lawrence

Mesquite is a huge getaway for Utah residents as it's the first place in Nevada you get to on I-15 coming in from Utah. Many residents of Mesquite have either come from the Salt Lake area or are snowbirds from the Wasatch Front. It's a relatively short drive for SLC area folks to experience the drastic change in climate especially during the winter months.

Otherwise, Mesquite attracts the same type of visitor that Las Vegas does. Those not wanting the excitement of the Strip, can relax in the slower pace and less congestion of Mesquite. I've noticed a lot of Canadian visitors and also I seem to notice more visitors and snowbirds from both Michigan and Ohio for some reason.

Actually, a lot of the newer residents that I have met, including those in our Del Webb community, are from Washington state, Alaska, and Canada. There are several of us from the northeast but most folks are from west of the Mississippi. You are right about Utahns as visitors. Beginning on Thursday night (doesn't anyone work in Utah on the weekends) the casino parking lots are mobbed with Utah plates and the casinos are definitely filled with Utahns.
