Hi guys,

I need some help here at work from some Nevada residents.

Is Carson City part of a county? Or is it it's own entity?

Is Lake Tahoe part of a county or town or does it stand alone? Is it considered part of Nevada or CA?

Thank you!

Well . . so much for the supposition "there are no dumb questions"! You don't need help . . take the initiative to Google. You have over 200 posts . . don't jerk everyone's chain!

Omg! And people say NJ people are supposed to be rude!!

I usually use Wiki for this type of stuff and can easily find out what cities are in which counties, but for this particular area, it doesn't make it very clear. Carson City isn't coming up in a county, so I didn't know if it was a mistake or if maybe it was something unique.

Since I use this board so often to posts for non-work reasons, and I often see people ask these types of questions, so figured it would be a great place to look. How hard is it for someone who lives in Carson City to tell me what their county is? Wasn't jerking anyone's chain, just asking a question.

Looks like Carson City is in Lyon County and possibly Tahoe in Douglas County and both California and Nevada share the lake

Carson City is in Carson City County (formally called Ormsby County). Douglas County, Nevada is on the eastern side of Lake Tahoe. On the CA side, Nevada, Placer and/or El Dorado counties (I think!!, I don't have a map near me) are on the western side of Lake Tahoe. There are regional boards (formed by both states) that control some aspects of Lake Tahoe.

Let me expand on this post a little. As was said, Carson City is its own county now instead of Ormsby County. It extends all the way up to the lake named, Lake Tahoe.

Just south of Cason City/County is Douglas County, NV. It also extends up to the lake named Lake Tahoe. Douglas County contains the area of Lake Tahoe called Stateline. That's the area people recall when they think of the casinos at Lake Tahoe.

Then, there is South Lake Tahoe. That's immediately adjecent to Stateline (Douglas County) towards the west. South Lake Tahoe is in California (El Dorado County) and no gambling is allowed.

Now, let's go back to Carson City/County along Lake Tahoe. Immediately north you will find Washoe County. That's the county that contains Reno. The City of Reno does not reach all the way to the lake, but the county it is in does reach that far.

That should cover the Nevada section of the Lake Tahoe area. There is more shoreline, but the remainder is in California.

I hope that clears it up for you.

I go with Tortoise...

You google "map lake tahoe"

map lake tahoe - Google Search

You pick the middle map which looks like a lake...

Google Image Result for http://lodging4vacations.com/lake-tahoe-rental/lake-tahoe-map.gif

And then you click the map....

http://lodging4vacations.com/lake-tahoe-rental/lake-tahoe-map.gif (broken link)

You end up with a map that is much clearer than Garth's wonderful exposition.

So you had to type "map Lake Tahoe" and click twice.

Tough duty..but you really did not need help.

Ohh and the Carson City government was a harder question. But Nevadans should be able to answer that off hand. Carson City is to counties as Washington DC is to states.

Washoe County contains Incline Village on the shore of Lake Tahoe.
So Nevada has three Counties that touch Tahoe, Washoe, Carson City, Douglas
California has two, Placer and El Dorado.
