If you are retired military, the FALLON is a good place as they have a growing Naval Air Station there. It has a nice PX and Commissary. The city of Fallon has a decent hospital and you are about an hour away from Reno which has two very large hospitals. Land is still available and houses are not too bad. They have sufficient water so things are green. A Nevada state veterans cemetery is in Fernley, about 30 miles away.

I would not recommend Lovelock or Battle Mountain mainly due to medical care. Their hospitals are more nursing home and ER type care. For anything major they have to ship you out and ironically, they ship you to another small town, Winnemucca. (One would think Battle Mountain would ship you to Elko where they have a pretty decent hospital and Lovelock would ship you to Reno but instead they ship you to Winnemucca. Go figure.) I would also not recommend Winnemucca as the hospital there is small (less than 25 beds) and they have absolutely no plans to expand beyond that. They have a very large ambulance service due to all the patients they have to ship to Reno.

I hear ELY has a nice hospital, and would take a look at that town. Not on a major highway so kind of isolated. I have heard nothing negative about ELY.

Tonopah is on the ropes and except for it being half way between Reno and Vegas, really has nothing to offer other than motels and fast food places for people passing through. That is about as far south as I would go and still call it "northern Nevada."

Fernley is not too far to Reno Sparks but has one major problem. A canal there broke and flooded hundreds of homes. You will really need to investigate the area so you do not end up with a home that had been previously flooded. They are planning on rebuilding the canal and using it in the future so the flood issue could happen again.

If I had to move right now, I would move to Fallon.

I think it really depends upon where you are moving from and what you have experienced in the past for living arrangements.

I moved from Los Angeles to the San Francisco Bay Area and that was an easy transition for me. What was difficult was moving from the Bay Area to Carson City. Originally I was going to move to Reno but decided, for the sake of commuting to my "new" job in Carson City, that I would move to Carson City. I was subsequently let go from that job (without reason) and have been through a long-term period of hell (as I like to call it) trying to secure a job that they don't just let you go without reason (the biggest drawback to Nevada). For six months I worked in Reno and commuted the valley (which was hell due to winds and snow). I was let go from that job (without reason, again) in March and am currently looking for another job. Did I mention that the drawback to this area are employers who just let you go without reason? Anyway....

I couldn't be more happy being here in Carson City (after five years) but it was a shock to move here initially. You don't have the public transportation that you do in the Bay Area (so if you are looking to get around by bus, you might as well scratch that idea) and you don't have the conveniences that you have for shopping & health care that you have in Reno. Now that I have lived here and adjusted, I just can't see myself moving to Reno or a more populated area. I've traveled the whole state of Nevada and have seen some really cool places to live (including Ely and Minden, mentioned in earlier posts, Austin, Eureka, Elko, and Beatty).

Ask yourself the following questions before pursuing a move: (1) what are the medical facilities that will be available to me if I move, (2) what are the transportation available if my car breaks down, (3) how far would I have to travel to do my shopping or repair my car, (4) what is there to do after 7 p.m., and (5) how important is my privacy?

As you get older, medical care is important. I know in Ely they use helicopter to transport you to the hospital. I know in Carson City that Carson-Tahoe (hospital) does not know how to respond to people having an asthma attack (personal experience). If this is important to you, then do some investigations of medical facilities. Don't just assume that if they have a hospital they are okay.

And, in a smaller town, your business is everyone's business. Word travels fast here. Not so in a larger town. There are advantages and disadvantages to that one. In Carson City, you run into people all the time. If you had a confrontation with someone, and it was negative, would you be able to handle that?

There are a lot of things to think about and prioritize. Once you have these, then look into the towns that will fit your needs and priorities. But do your research before you move and give yourself time to adjust to the new area. If I were younger, and health care was not a priority, I certainly would look at my next move being to a place like Elko, Ely, Eureka, or Beatty. But first I would see what type of employment was available and what the attitude of the employer are. The last thing I would want is to be stuck in a place that is smaller than Carson City and not be able to find work!

I work at the hospital in Ely. If you require specialized medical care, honestly, look somewhere else. We do have some visiting specialists, but some of the major specialties have little (1 day/month) or no coverage at all. I know you mentioned you have asthma, and we have no pulmonology coverage at all. And our transports are by fixed wing aircraft as we are too far from a major medical facility for helicopters. We do have a fixed wing team based in Ely, but they are not always avalible for transports, so sometimes flights can be delayed 2 hours or more. And weather is always an issue. But for the size of the facility, we do offer many more services than other similar sized hospitals in the state, mostly due to our remoteness.

Most people in town get their out of town care in Salt Lake City. The hospitals are much better and access to specialists is better than in Las Vegas or Reno.

Default Deadend Beatty

Stay away from Beatty. If you have to drive through it make sure you do the speed limit of 25. Not a friendly town.

But they are out like cockaroaches nothing elese going on over there except for the 4 or 5 brothels an the 2 casinos. There is also a AWESOME pizza place The Sourdough Saloon.

I liked the Ely area when I drove through there last summer... had that small town feel but wasn't completely "boonies." You have elko not that far away and SLC within a reasonable distance too. Outside of that, you want to be looking at Western NV, eastern NV is very desolate. As for the suggestion above about Fallon, I can agree.. but the weather there sucks. Very sandy/dusty place.

That's funny. 1st time I've heard of this analogy for my home town (if you can believe it). Would only recommend if one could deal with very few restaurants and cold winters. Summers are fine and people are generally nice if not a bit cliquey (not sure that's a word).
