Whats it like in Northern Nevada
What is it like to live in Reno or Carson City. What areas should I stay away from... for safety sake... I am moving there next month.... Would like any input that anyone can give.

Just south of Carson City is the Minden/Gardnerville area. Very quiet family community of 3,000. Best schools in the state, virtually no crime, 15 minutes from Carson City, 20 minutes to Lake Tahoe and 45 minutes to Reno. Check it out!

They are a little bigger than that. The county total is around 50,000.

downtown Reno, at night, a block or two off the Reno strip, is a place you should not walk alone.

mod cut First of all, there is no such thing as the "Reno strip". Never has been. If you are talking about DOWNTOWN RENO, the premier properties are Harrah's, Eldorado, and Legacy. Transit between these places are totally safe, even if one has bundles of "Franklins" hanging out his pocket. The other decent joints are the Peppermill, Atlantis, and Grand Sierra, which are nowhere near downtown. The only place one doesn't want to be is around Oddie Blvd. mod cut

31 miles from Reno going East is the town of Fernley. It's still a small town by Reno/Sparks standards, but there's a lot of new housing, and it's a lot less expensive. It is also a growing community. I don't have children now, but I have not heard any complaints from those who do, as to the schools, etc. So far Fernley has been an area for poor people, but that is also changing. Lowes just opened, and a Super Walmart is going in now. The only thing I can say at this point, is that if you are on Medicare you don't want to move here, as you can't get a good advantage plan with it, where you can see Doctor's in the Renown Regional Health System. The good Doctor's and Specialists won't take the advantage plans or PPO plans, so you're better off staying in Washoe County. Fernley is right on the border of Washoe but it's in Lyon county.

By Reno Strip, I meant the block that has "The Biggest Littlest City Sign" adorning it. go a few blocks in either direction...near the hotels that cater to homeless residents...and that's where it gets a little scary!.

Hello all,
I am currently living in the highly dense & populated Southern California and lately have been fascinated with the rural lifestyle of Northern Nevada. Before I get too excited I wanted to find out about the local communities out there.
I have noticed that most of the counties are somewhere between 80%-90% White-Caucasian, with the much of the rest comprised of Latinos and Native Americans. As a Muslim Arab-American, I wonder how my experience would be like in Northern Nevada. The few people I have spoken with have warned me from staying in the region because of my background. Then again I figure I could probably pass as Latino. Either way, I am interested in finding about race relations in this part of the state.
Please share your advice or experiences with us on this issue in this thread. Looking forward to hearing from you all...

No one will care or notice in Reno, but that is not rural. In the rural areas they don't much care of outsiders, doesn't matter if you are muslim or Californian.
They do like Mormons.
But on the whole in the rural areas you will be judged by what you do. If you attempt an urban look or bring urban attitudes with you, you will have problems even if you have a mullet.
