Ca some one tell me the attributes of Reno/Carson City and other northern Nevada towns? Am interested in knowing how you feel about where you live, the positive things not the negative things... I have read lots of negative but few positive makes me wonder if there is any civic pride for the area.

Both are nice towns with a lot going on. Carson City has the Brewery Arts Center, great music shows.
Reno has a lot going on. One of the cool things about the casinos in Reno is that there are a lot of musical theatrical people who also contribute to the local arts.

The outdoors can't be beat, with Tahoe a few minutes away on one direction and Pyramid (a true wonder of the world) the other way.

The negatives on the towns are like the negatives everywhere, too many people, too much traffic.

Regarding gambling and the casinos. Most people in Reno seldom go near a casino and seldom go down town. The casinos are like factories, they make money and supply jobs, but if you don't need to go to a factory or a casino, you just don't.

Thanks for your input... that makes me feel better about this pending move in a few weeks. Having never been there I am apprehensive as you can imagine but am looking forward to leaving Florida, I have only been here for a couple of years and I really dont like it.

What is most disappointing is that salaries in Florida are really low. The weather is hot and muggy in the summer, but beautiful in the winter. Some days I really like it here but for the most part I dont. Having lived out west I really miss the mountains, camping, fresh air, etc... so this might be good for me.

Its nice to know that there is some culture and artsy stuff to do as that is a big part of who I am, I do know the area is full of history... which interests me a lot, I like history and historical sites.

As far as the casinos, I will probably be like every other transplant it will be exciting for a minute then it will get old. I know that happened to my son who is in school @ UNLV his first year or so he hung out on the strip... now that he has lived there for 5 yrs and is really old enough to enjoy it he doesnt go near it...

Are you moving to Reno, Carson City, or Las Vegas?

I don't live in Reno but my wife and I did live there a long time ago and try to go back for visits whenever we can. Still, my opinion may not mean much; but...To me the best thing about Reno is the proximity to the Sierras, (scenery, skiing, hiking, fishing, fresh air, quaint towns, etc.) and the weather which I consider fairly mild. It is also close to the most beautiful parts of California. There were 19 ski resorts just 45 minutes away when I lived there and I don't think that has changed. The people are very outdoorsy and healthy with a lot of new age types running around; just the opposite of us Las Vegans. On evenings and weekends the traffic on the sidewalks and in the parks is Adidas to Adidas. They are generally very friendly and laid back folks except that most northern Nevadans absolutely hate southern Nevada, and will get livid when Las Vegas is mentioned; while southern Nevadans hardly ever think about northern Nevada at all. But in and around Reno you'll find more great things to do than you can experience in one lifetime (so you'll need to go back next lifetime to do it all ), and it is an overall great place to live. The city itself can be a little boring but with so much to do in the area you won't mind; it's a good place to chill and take life easy. Only negative I can think of (besides being afraid to mention I'm from Las Vegas) is that Reno lacks the variety of good restaurants that we have in the south. But then, when Las Vegas was the size of Reno we didn't have many good restaurants either.

Thanks Buzz... it sounds like Boulder Colorado or the way Boulder/Denver use to be a long time ago. I am moving to Carson City/Reno.... My dilemma and I wont be able to solve the it until I get there is where, which place, Carson City or Reno... "Urbanish" or small town. I will have to see where I feel most comfortable.

Zinnia,
I am moving back to NV shortly, after being back in my home state of Montana for eight years. I hear ya on the wage thing. Montana is ranked the worst or second to last in the nation for wages and it's sad, but a born and raised Montanan can't afford to live here! So, back to Nevada I go. I loved Reno and Carson last time I lived there. The casinos are everywhere, as stated in so many posts, but they also offer a lot of other attractions in the casinos besides gambling that families and couples can enjoy. Reno is bigger, more to see and do, but Carson was nice, close to Tahoe, and nicer for the days when you don't want to fight the traffic. I grew to love Nevada and missed the desert when I moved back to MT. It has a beauty of its own, and there are gorgeous mountainous places in Nevada too. Good luck with your move!

Even though Carson and areas around Carson continue to grow it still has the small town feel for me. You tend to run into people you know when you are out and about and I like the fact that you can still get across town in minutes if you stay off the main streets (50 and 395). There are outside events throughout the year in the downtown area that are fun to attend, too. The weather-can't beat the summers here. It gets warm during the day but it cools down at night. Dry not humid. Coming from Florida you will appreciate them. The winters may take a little getting used to. We had some extremely cold temps last winter but it isn't the norm. A couple of years ago we had a lot of snow-again, not the norm. All the better to live in Carson than commute from Reno. And, of course, what has been said in the posts above-being so close to the Sierras-activities year round.

I have heard that it gets terribly windy there quite often - does that mean there is a lot of blowing dust/sand? I have a damaged eye, and cannot live in areas where there is a lot of blowing dust.

Also, might anyone know the average rental for a good quality apartment or condo there?

Thank you.
