Has anyone done a car trip from Hoover Dam, up 93 to Ely, and over 50 to Reno?

It is a potential segment of a long 6+ week car trip this summer; we would probably be zooming that segment ~ end of May/first days of June.

Studying Goog maps, it looks like a decent drive from Hoover Dam to Ely, in a day, stay over night in Ely, and then across to Reno.
Any opins are welcome.
BR, mD

Both legs of the trip will be about 5 hours driving each, leaving plenty of time for sightseeing. If your not in a hurry, go up 93 all the way rather than the 318/6 cutoff route. It add 40 miles, but there's lots of interesting stuff on the way. I suggest Cathedral Gorge outside Panaca for a good diversion, although in the summer it may be a bit warm (not Vegas warm, mind you).

US 50 isn't quite as lonely as they would have you believe. In the summer, there's quite a bit of traffic on it. At the chamber of commerce in Ely you can get a lonely highway passport and stop off at places along the way and get it checked off, and if you do them all, you can get a certificate. Eureka is a nice stop, I don't care much for Austin, but there is the old "castle" outside of town. Unfortunatly, the shoe tree in Middlegate is cut down (some vandals did it around new years), but last time I was out that way, people began throwing shoes in another tree. If you're gonna be in a car that like twists and turns and absolutly no traffic or highway patrol, take the 722 outside of Austin, the old highway 50. It rejoins US 50 at Middlegate.

Thanks for the opins, esp uli2000...appreciate the detail. Yes, we will be in our '02 VetteVert, hauling azz from Hoover Dam to Reno/Sparks and on toward Vancouver. A leg of a 6-7 week cross country road trip including a cruise of AK.

I'm wondering why you'd want to do that? If you just want to get to Reno why go that way?
