Hi, I'm driving from Salt Lake City to Tonopah this weekend. I have plenty of time and want to do this leisurely, so I'm going to spend the night somewhere along the way.

I can either:
Take I-80 to Elko, spend the night, then go to Carlin and head south on SR 278 to US 50 to SR 376
or
Take I-80 to Wendover, then south on US 93 to Ely, spend the night, and then US 6.

It looks like Ely is about an hour faster, but I don't really care. Would you recommend one route over the other? Elko over Ely or vice versa? Also looking for lodging suggestions in either town. Unfortunately, the Hotel Nevada is booked already.

Thanks in advance!

In Ely, I have stayed at the Motel 6 and another time at the Jailhouse casin/motel. Jailhouse Casino Ely Nevada - Full Site Coming Soon. Both were fine.

In Elko, the best place in town is the Red Lion hotel. Red Lion Hotel & Casino - Elko, NV - Where Winners Play. From there, it goes anywhere down to Motel 6 and some mom & pop no-name motels. I sometimes stay at Stockman's motel in downtown Elko. The place is old a little worn but cheap and walking distance to other places.

Personally, while I like the Red Lion in Elko, I prefer to stay at the Gold Country Inn and Casino which is across the street. The rooms are a bit nicer and the diner is pretty good.

The Ramada Copper Queen in Ely is a pretty solid property.

My vote would be Elko as they have three pretty darned good Basque restaurants in the downtown area - Biltoki, Star Hotel and the Nevada Dinner House. I cannot choose between the three as I have had some pretty good meals at all of them.

I stayed in Elko on a trip last year, very ghetto downtown with lots of shady people walking around. Stay on the northeast part of town where there are nicer hotels..away from the casinos. You'll be ok.. Ely has a LOT less crime, but not a lot of choices of where to stay

If you go the Ely route there is also the Prospector (owned by the Hotel Nevada people), A Best Western downtown, the Ramada Copper Queen, The Bristlecone (a very popular motel in town, often booked up), a La Quinta, and a few other independent places. The La Quinta is brand new and is right on Great Basin about 1/4 mile from the US 6 turnoff.
