Default Family of Five: Looking into Winnemucca/Battle Mountain area

Our family is looking into moving - one of the areas on our list [narrowed down to about five different cities that have family or friends nearby] is the areas around Winnemucca/Battle Mountain as my husband is looking into a job at the mines.

It is my husband, myself and our three boys. We also have a 5 month puppy that we aren't sure what he is but he's 45lbs and we also have a 7 yr old Shih Tzu

We do not have a lot of money but we will be selling our home and are open to renting or getting a manufactured home. We currently live in the northern suburbs of Pittsburgh, PA in a upscale manufactured home community.

Any suggestions are welcomed for living - not sure if there are any rentals in the area due to the small nature of the towns!

Now comes jobs - I do a lot of work online with social media, brand campaigns, etc so I can work from anywhere but I'm mostly just a mom.

My husband currently gets very nice pay but lousy benefits from his job one that may not be around much longer as the company isn't doing too well (as is with most of the US). He works in a industrial plumbing warehouse. He runs forklifts, cranes, and fabricates metal pipe. He is strong and often carries bundles of metal pipe without the crane.

I would like to be able to continue staying at home with the boys until they are all in school full-time and once we find a location I will be actively seeking out telecommute positions available to that state.

We are hoping to find something in a area that is beautiful and less than a 1/2 days drive from areas where we can have quick family excursions.

Tips, advice??

mod cut: We have it narrowed down to a few spots and now are looking into those places trying to determine which of those places is the best for jobs and relocating a family. Trying to find information for a larger family is difficult. Almost all the threads I've read are for single men that are looking to move. It's a lot different when you have three children that you are moving with.

I really have not seen a question I can answer. Winnemucca and Battle Mountain are very isolated areas, even with the highway you are several hours from anything. Living there is much like living in Pittsburg if Pittsberg had 10,000 people and you had to drive to Philadelphia to go shopping for anything more than the basics. Fer instance, there is one good restaurant in Winnemucca, none in Battle Mountain. A few years ago some magazine did a story on Battle Mountain, the cover photo was the Shell Station sign with the S burned out.

Now, I like both towns, but that is because I pay little attention to towns except as a place to buy gas. People that live in the towns probably have a different perspective.

Would you say that 'poverty flats' near Winnemucca has the same problems or maybe you don't know the area well enough to say good or bad.

Well Pittsburgh, PA has I think 1.5 million people in Allegheny county. I have about 5 super Walmarts all within 10-20 minute drive of our house.

Now my hometown on the other hand JUST got a Walmart a few years ago. It's in the heart of Allegheny National Forest and I loved growing up there.

I'm hoping for a place that we will be able to connect as a family, I can grow my online businesses as well as start a photography business, my husband can have a decent paying job and we will be able to on the weekends or extended holidays be able to go to places to hike, explore, relax, etc.

I for sure want to me at least in a town or close to it that has basic things like a grocery store, hospital, and safety officers. I do most of my non-parisable shopping on the internet anyway so all we'd need is the meat, dairy, and fruit/vegetables.

So I'm getting from you that Winny would be a better choice as or living.

My good friend lives in Battle Mountain currently. She spends most of her time at home with them and I do know they go to public school but for the most part she takes them on trips to the coast and parks instead of staying in town while her husband works long hours.

I know that drugs are a problem everywhere I guess it's just the company you keep and your values that keeps you clean

I am sure your friend does not take the kids out on trips everyday. there is not even a bowling alley or a movie thether or a dry cleaner or a arcade in BM so most kids will find themselves getting into some sort of trouble and most of BM population is toothless that is a FACT and I for one would not want my kids being around a high population of toothless loosers.

BTW when your friends kids get older they will get bored with hanging in the house with mommy like most kids and teens they want to get out an explore. Yoheu can have all the values you want KIDS are KIDs and ones who live in bad areas with a lot of drugs sometimes if not most times also find themselves doing drugs and looking like Gumby by the age of 16

the fact that you friend takes them out of town often is a sign that there is not much to do in her own neck of the woods
