Default FYI: Starbucks in Fallon

I have not seen this posted and some folks might want to know. I drove thru Fallon yesterday and noticed a new building going up with a Starbucks sign out front. Also, there is a new Walmart being built in Fernley. It is very interesting to see these small towns grow.

Fernley is growing.....but, don't move here if you're on Medicare and want an advantage plan that works with the Renown Regional Health Care System, because you'll end up having to go to inferior Doctors, because the really good Doctor's won't accept their "fees for service" nor their PPO's. You'll have to go to Carson City, 50 miles away, or Yerington, or go to Northern Nevada Medical Center or St. Mary's. Let's face it, Renown offers the best Doctor's, the best hospital and the only Level 2 Trauma Center between Sacramento, CA and Salt Lake City, UT. Medicare sucks in Fernley.

I think it is sad that Nevada is being Californicated. The takeover of small town America by the Chain Stores does not make me happy.

Sorry to disagree with you Greatbasinguide but Starbucks is from Washington and Walmart is from back east now not protecting California but these businesses are growing up everywhere. I do feel that if a small community wants them so they don't have to travel to a bigger city to get some of the benefits of competition then go for it.

Two part statement on my part, conjoined with the fact that small town America is being ruined by the chains, I am sure you are familiar with the ghosttowns in the midwest caused by Walmart.

The Californication of America is not dependent upon California based multinational corporations. It makes no difference where the destruction originated

A grave and tragic fallacy is that the benefits of competition from the multinationals is beneficial to small towns. The fact is that the multinationals destroy small town economies. In addition they create homogenous bland towns, driving across the country you cannot tell whether you are in the Southwest or New England. In my not so humble opinion these large corporations are incredibly destructive of America.

Well when you point it out that way you have a point. However I was coming from the side of a consumer, back when I live in Seward Alaska a very small town 1 main grocery store along with one clothing store and then a couple of junk stores. When my daughter was born 30 years ago I was paying in excess of $8.00 for a pack of diapers, I was 4.50 for a gallon of milk the fruits and vegetables were rotten before they hit the store. When the chain came in it was absolutely amazing how we could find items so inexpensive and to this day milk is not $4.50 a gallon there, the fruits and vegetables have improved greatly. So in that respect the local guys should not try to steal your dough just cuz you have no competition closer that 125 miles.

I live in Fallon and support the local business Jive and Java. They make a better drink than Starbucks anyways.

Tressa,

I completely agree. I lived in a rural town in Virginia and the same clothing items that I bought for $10 in Norfolk or Va. Beach was close to $35. And the families that owned the stores also owned the industry in town depressing the wages.

Thank heavens for the competition.

Of course, with the internet ...

Update: The Starbuck's in Fallon closed several months back, there's still one inside Safeway though. I've also heard from several people that the Walmart in Fernley is not doing so hot and may close as well.
