Default Old Emigrant Trail

This question is pretty much for you greatbasinguide, I really try to stay involved in what you have to say. I look forward to all of your replies, so here goes. We purchased 40 acres off of Old Emigrant Trail and American Canyon Road in what I have been told is the Buena Vista Valley. We liked what we have seen so far and the view of Granite Peak is incredible, our only concern is (my wife) the moron crickets but that really isn't my question, my question is what do you honestly think of the area and please be frank. I know regardless we will hopefully make our move to the area and enjoy the peace and quiet. Everyone feel free to chime in all input will be greatly appreciated!

Thank you,
tkaser & Vinney

I have been to Unionville on the west side of BV Valley and I thought Buena Vista Valley to be kind of quiet. Just a few ranches/farms here and there. What possesed you to live in this area. It's a long way to the supermarket to get a quart of milk. Hope you don't get "cabin fever" this coming winter.

I hear ya, we haven't actually made the move as of yet but that is the key "kind of quiet" when we came out last year after buying this chunk of land that was the first thing that hit me when I closed the door.....you could hear ......NOTHING! that my friend is AWESOME. Perfect place for me, not so sure about the wife but time will tell. One question if you know, when looking at the area from google earth there appears to be some sort of mine, plant or whatever just to the west of us on the other side of the range, but not close to I-80. Any ideas?

Thanks again,
tkaser & vinney

I think that may be the Rochester mine. There was once a small town there called Rochester in the late 1800's/early 1900's. I also know that there is a hot springs east of Unionville (Kyle Hot Springs ??). I have never been to it. I think you would need a topo map to find it. Once when I visited Unionville, I hiked up the canyon and eventually climbed to the ridge of the Humboldt range. A nice view looking west towards I-80 and the Humboldt river! You're right about it being QUIET out there. I hope Greatbasinguide sees this thread.

Go to Wikimapia - Let's describe the whole world! for Google Earth satellite photos. I have "marked" or identified some places in and around Buena Vista Valley. Place the mouse in the square areas for identification.

I had no idea about that site, wikimapia, so I am adding a square to point out about where we are located (hope it works) . As far as Rochester Mine, correct me if I am wrong but isn't it a dead mine or is it still active? everything from google makes it look like it is still going.

The mine is closing this summer and they are trying to get the current workers new jobs in other mines. I have land there at Rocky Canyon, we drove through Buena Vista this April, very pretty area your correct but for me too far out, my land is off of Old Victory Highway. How'd you locate your land? Do you plan to farm the are?

Actually we found it on ebay of all places. This is the guy we bought if from Index We feel as though we really got a great deal and just the thought of being away from it all and owning a piece of America is something that we dream of daily. We know we only own surface rights and hopefully we will get out there to do a little metal detecting and who knows maybe build a retirement home so that we can sit back on the front porch looking at Granite Mountain.

That's our plan exactly we will be retiring next year, we had a shop/garage put up this past year with some of our stuff already in there and will be headed in that direction this time next year. We had a water well drilled with 90 gpm and electricity brought in the year before.

Looking for to the piece and quiet as well, we experienced the mormon crickets in 2006, all I can say is WOW!!! but they don't hurt you they will destroy everything in their path though

That awesome you all will not be far from where we hope to be one day. Just curious though and I don't mean to be to forward but (ball park) what did it cost you for the well and I hear a lot about the water not being good in Nevada due to the mining. Do you know anything about that and did you have it tested? Also I am sure with you being on the west side of the range that electric was pretty simple to have brought to you.
Any additional information is greatly appreciated!
