Question Driving Hwy. 95 in Oct. Is Virginia city worth a stop?

Driving thru Vegas to Reno in Oct. Is Virginia City worth a stop? If we stay in Tonopah overnight, will there still be time to stop in Virginia City and still arrive in Reno for Hotel Reservations that night?

YES!!!! YES!!!! YES!!!! Virginia City is the best! I love that place!!! I personally have always gone up there from so cal, on 395, so i can't tell you what the 95 is like, but I do know, that it only took us 7 hours to get there. So, from Tonopah to Reno is very doable, provided the road is good. From VC to Reno is less than a hour away, so if you have reservations in Reno...no problem. Now, if you're like me, the first time I went to VC, I was only planning on staying about an hour......9 hours later, we were checking into the Comstock Lodge there in VC!!! I fell in love with the whole little city. It is defenitly worth the stop there. The main street there "C" street is geared for all the tourist, but if you wander around some of the side streets, you're going to see some really cool things. My husband and I go there, at least once a year, on our anniversary, since we were married up there in the old courthouse on "B" street. If you'd like to know anything about VC, just ask..I could go on forever about that place!

Yes, worth a stop. Easily the best preserved and nicest of the old west mining towns in NV.

I just (this last weekend) did the drive to Vegas and back from Sacramento and did the drive down 95. It's an awesome and very scenic drive if you appreciate the dessert. You can easily make it past Tonopah and stop further north if you want. Maybe go to Hawthorne (stopped there for pizza at this great little pizza joint) and stay there, neat little quaint town right next to the mountains and next to a beautiful lake, Walker Lake. Then you can take advantage of seeing the lake on your way out in the morning.

From there Virginia City is probably another 2-3 hours depending on how fast you like to drive (100+ out in that dessert is nothin') !

Yes. Drive north on US-95/US-6 until you intersect US-50. Take US-50 west. West of the town of Dayton, you'll see a sign pointing to Virginia City up Sixmile Canyon on your right. This takes you into Virginia City the "back way" -- along the way, you'll go through two other mining ghost towns.

Then to get to Reno, take NV-341 down from Virginia City to US-395. Take US-395 north and you'll be in downtown Reno in 10 minutes.

I'd reckon on 3 hours from Tonopah to VC, then 1 hour from VC to Reno. It can be done in less, esp. the Tonopah->VC drive. The VC->US 395 run -- take your time, especially if it is dark.
