None of these Nevada cities are good for families because they are for gambling and hookers.

You've been watching way too much television.

I agree that this question is like comparing apples to oranges. Nothing compares to Las Vegas: it is a city unique to the rest of the world. Overall the schools are not that great, but like any major city, you can shop around and plant yourself in the right neighborhood.

The other towns you mentioned are tiny in comparison.

Of the rural towns, I would say Winnemucca (population 17,000) has the best schools. The Grammar School (k-4) there has won national academic recognition awards. The school system seems different from other Nevada towns I have been to and worked in. For instance, there is a Middle School (for just 5th and 6th graders), that is such a delicate yet neat age, I think it is cool that they have a separate school for them. The Junior High (7-8) and the High school seem passionate about all types of sports and extracurriculars. The kids here are overall nice and welcoming. There seems to be quite a social outlet for kids despite being the middle of nowhere. I don't see a lot of crime or pollution here, but it is hard to find a place to live unless you can buy a house.

The gold/copper mines provide the schools with a lot of money for technology and scholarships, and there are actually a lot of places for teenagers to get jobs here (unlike the rest of the state).

The downside is it is an extremely small town. There are 2 grocery stores and a Walmart along with about 30 restaurants. There is a movie theater that shows 2 movies a week. For big city entertainment, you would need to go to Reno or Boise, but if you like clean small towns and can afford a house, this is the best place on your list!

It's 2.5 hours away from Reno and 3 hours away from Boise.

If you don't mind the heat, choose Las Vegas. Pretty large Hawaiian "expat" community, lots of cheap housing, but job market is among the worst in the US.

Out of the rest of them, I'd choose Elko or Winnemucca. I live in Ely and while I like it, it may be too much of a culture shock. Wells wouldnt be too bad due to it's proximity to Elko and Salt Lake City, but has by far the least going for it amenities wise. Housing may be difficult to come by in Elko or Winny though. Here in Ely, there are lots of vacant houses for sale, but not much to rent, at decent prices at least. We've been happy with the schools here, but I know many who are not. Not a whole lot to do for teenagers, and our teen pregnancy rate is so high you'd think it was a requirement in high school.
