Buzz is correct, it is 60 days. I would suggest doing it with in that time frame. We were NEVER in an accident in our lives until we moved here. We have been in 4 accidents in the last 1 1/2 years and I could definetly see where having out of state insurance would be an issue....especially in Michigan which is a "No Fault" state.

Michblows...what about the Michigan government shut down I am hearing about? Can you believe it!!! You are getting out at the right time

Why on earth would a neighbor turn someone in for something like that? That's ridiculous.

If the police stop you just tell them you just moved into town. How would they know any different?
If you cancel your insurance, they will give you a pro rated check for the portion you paid for that you didn't use.

I'm from Michigan and it will be cheaper. Everything is cheaper in Vegas than it is in Michigan. EVERYTHING........trust me. Michigan is out of control with taxes. How do they expect citizens to live?

No they don't. If you just paid for one whole year say in Utah, then you move to Nevada a month later, you will not get credit for the remaining months left. You will then have to pay for a full year in Nevada, and you end up losing the year you just paid in Utah.
So, wait on the plates, let them run out. And avoid those pesky people.

If you don't get new plates right away, make sure you don't change your drivers license, either. I've heard the ticket for in-state license with out-of-state plates is astronomical!

Good point, PinkString (although my advice will be just the oposite). Nevada won't give you a credit on the unused Michigan registration but Michigan may give you a refund.

Some states like California will give you a refund on the unused portion that you didn't use so it would make sense to do things the "right way" and to register your car in Nevada within the 60 days and then apply for a refund for the unused Michigan registration.

Here is the application:
