Default Moving - Vehicle Registration Question

DH & I are trying to move to NV in December. The 08 CA registration is due in December for both vehicles. I read that NV DMV charges extra for late registration, would that include late registration from out of state vehicles, or just for registration renewal in NV? And if we paid the CA registration for 08 before we move, would we still have to pay in full for the 08 NV registration for a year?

Thanks. I hope my question makes sense.
Kelly

When you arrive in LV you have 60 days to register your vehicle.
If it is expired in Calif when you register here, I would THINK that you would be acessed a late fee altho...sometimes it slips past them......

A rep at the DMV office I use told me they will charge a late fee for out of state residents registering late. However, when talking to others around town, like dynimagelv said, it might just be who you get at the DMV office as to if they're kind enough to overlook it or not. I didn't use an office in LV, though.

Like we've discussed in another thread, I believe that California is one of the states which will refund the unused portion of your registration if you move. I posted the link to the request forum somewhere. I'll try to look it up again. If I forget, DM me and remind me if you want it.

Thanks for the advice. I'm trying to figure out the most cost effective thing. My husbands registration is going to be less than $75 here in CA, and in NV. Mine may be $50 more in NV than CA, and I want to the best thing.

It would be nice if CA refunds the money, but I'd prefer to pay it once vs. twice.

Just a quick reminder. After you move CA will send you renewal papers in the mail anyway. Be sure to fill them out that you have moved out of state. We moved to Texas last January. My car was due to be plated in April in Ca. We received the Dmv stuff in the mail and just threw it out as we were now in Tx and had our car plated here. Well It is now Oct. and we just got another one in the mail. I looked at it and if Ca didn't hear a response from us they were going to garnish our wages for over $400.00. (this includes fee and late fee penalities) Make sure you look at any papers and send them back.

I just received the papers this week. That's what prompted my curiosity.

If it were me I would wait to plate the cars in Nevada. You are moving in Dec and they expire in Dec. You are going to have to change the plates over anyway. I would save myself the hassle and just do it once.

That's what I'm thinking. I just need to figure out what the late fee is going to be. 1 vehicle is due early Dec., the other is late Dec.

Here is the page from the DMV site that will give you that information:

Vehicle Registration Rewenal Options

...DMV is required to charge late fees that consist of taxes and penalties. You must pay the full renewal fees for the coming year and the pro-rated Registration Fee and Governmental Services Taxes for the period of time the vehicle was not registered. Additional penalties are $6 per month on the Registration Fee and 10% of the Governmental Services Taxes (including Supplemental Governmental Services Taxes in applicable counties.)"

I'm thinking that they won't charge that fee for out of staters registering late as we talked about above but it sounds as if they are legally entitled to charge you if they wish.

My registration is going to be around $36 in NV & $84 in CA, I can't wait for the drop, but then again the insurance goes up, almost double.
