One of the reasons I enjoy living out here is the sense of community. If something tragic happens, the town gathers round to support the family in need.

Please note: I have changed the names of the innocent victims in this true story.

Jim & Suzie had been dating for X amount of time. Suzie had decided to break up with Jim. She had plans to leave town & start a new life far away from Jim. Jim had sweet-talked a mutual friend (Paul) into helping him get back together with Suzie. Paul had no idea he was just a pawn.

Paul contacted Suzie & told her Jim had left some of her things at his house, she was welcome to stop by to pick them up. Suzie agreed on a date/time. As Suzie headed down to Paul’s house with a friend, she had no idea that Jim was laying in wait for her. Paul had no idea what Jim had planned.

When Suzie & her girl friend arrived, Jim appeared out of nowhere, with a gun. Suzie & her girl friend ran from the house & got into the friend’s car. Jim was shooting at the girls as they left. Jim got into another vehicle & followed the girls. The girls called 911, the dispatchers told the girls to keep driving, that the deputies were on their way & they would find them. There were bullet holes in the back window& a few of the tires had been shot out already. Jim continued to shoot as he followed the girls down the road. The girls decided it was safer if they stopped in a Lakeside Casino. It was a fatal mistake.

The girls made it inside the casino. Jim was right behind them, as were the deputies. Before Jim could make it into the crowded casino with a very loaded gun, the deputies tried to stop him. Jim shot the first deputy, Ian Deutch 5 times with an SKS assault rifle. While Ian lay injured in the parking lot, another deputy shot & killed Jim.

Ian was air flighted to Las Vegas, where he later died from his injuries. Ian had spent 5 yrs with the Sheriff’s K-9 unit before being deployed to Afghanistan. He was a proud member of the Nevada Army National Guard. He had returned to Pahrump 1 month earlier & this was his 2nd day back on the job. He left behind 2 kids (a young daughter & a teenage son), a loving wife, a brother & 2 heartbroken parents. His 4 legged work partner "Chico" was given to the family at his memorial.

Ian’s body made quite the trip. He was shot in Pahrump, life flighted to Vegas, driven back out to Pahrump (via Hwy 160), there was a public viewing in Pahrump, then he was driven to Vegas (via Hwy 95) for the actual memorial, then driven back to Pahrump for burial.

The amazing outpouring from the public was breath taking. The amount of people that lined the streets as he was been driven thru town; the amount of official vehicles (not just Nye County Sheriff Office) that took part in the procession; the amount of cards/letters/offers for help the family & the Sheriff’s Office received. It was just….amazing. There were candlelight vigils, public memorial services, for weeks it was tough to find a dry eye in the valley. Still to this day I get teary eyed watching the videos on YouTube & it’s been 4 years now. I didn’t know Ian personally, but I knew of him.

After Ian’s death, our County courthouse was renamed in his honor, as was “Honeysuckle Park”. Each year there is a golf tournament held in his honor, as he enjoyed a good round of golf – even when he was deployed over seas. One of the local car dealerships revealed that Ian had been in, shopping for a graduation gift for his son. In honor of his memory, they gave the vehicle to the son. With every option that Ian had asked about.

Nye County has had very few officers die in the line of duty. Only 7 since 1905, including Ian. Nye County Sheriff's Office, Nevada, Fallen Officers

Cre8lite,
I don't know if you are the official welcome to Pahrump and Visitors center rolled into one but keep up the good job. Never been there but maybe one day I'll go check out spring mountain track if it's still there.

Hey Cre8lite How about the latest on the cop thing. As I get it 6 patrolmen arrested the acting Sheriff who is the number 2 Asst Sheriff? For the horrible crime of destroying voting posters?

And the Sheriff reinstated everybody?
