Hi, I have read the entire thread this morning and loved it! Full of great information. I visited Pahrump several years ago with my family and enjoyed the one night we spent there. I have a few questions regarding life in Pahrump.

1. How does the water taste, and how is the general drought affecting water there?

2. Is there a gym in town?

3. How is the soil for growing things such as corn or other vegetables?

4. You mentioned you had a pomegranate tree. If you still have it, does it produce?

Thanks for a great continuing thread!

thanks ticking!

everyone's taste buds are different & i've lived in a few different spots in my lifetime, but i've got no problems drinking the well water here. i grew up on well water in northern california & ours here is better than there. i avoided the city water in phoenix (you could SMELL the chlorine, eeewwww).

as for the drought....i can't say that it's affecting us much. more & more people are conserving water on their own, but there is nothing mandated that says we HAVE to do anything.

we have 6 (i think) gyms in town, the ones i can think of off the top of my head:
Anytime Fitness Gyms Pahrump, Nevada Fitness Centers Pahrump

https://www.facebook.com/chfpahrump

depending on what end of town you live on will determine your soil type. some lots have more clay, others have more alkali. but for the most part, we can grow just about everything here. tomatoes, cucumbers/melons, alfalfa, corn, peppers, herbs all do well here. the things i've noticed that don't do well here: redwood trees (not moist enough), bougainvillea (too hot/cold), red apple ground cover (too cold). i'm sure there are more our local master gardeners can tell you what will/will not work here.

yes, i do still have my pomegranate tree! it is....almost 5 yrs old(?) last year i had 1 fruit that was the right size (it fit in the palm of my hand), but it wasn't quite edible. there were 2 or 3 others that were almost big enough, but again, not edible. the others were way too small. i'm hoping this year we'll have edible fruit

i looked around thru my old paperwork & found this:

it's not a great copy, but it does the trick. it shows what to plant & when, i got it from master gardeners. they don't have many things online, but you can always stop by their office on the corner of calvada blvd & dandelion & pick up all kinds of literature. they often have a booth at the local events & you can ask the staff about what to plant, what will/won't work, etc.

just when i thought we were done with the visitors....BAM! one last straggler came thru, so we took them out to ash meadows. this time i saw more than i had on my previous trips still haven't seen it all, but i'm getting there

the longstreet cabin, named after andrew jackson longstreet. he settled in ash meadows ~1895, ranching & mining. he built his cabin near a spring, altho the one standing isn't the original (the original washed away in a flash flood in 1984) it gives you a good idea of how simple life was back then. the door opening is kinda short. i'm 5'6" & cleared the opening no problem. anyone over 6' would bonk their head!

i have no idea what these large white boulders are in front of the cabin, as there was no signs. landmarks maybe? 'when you get to the large white boulders, head west' kinda thing???

the spring outside longstreet's cabin is actually pretty good size. not sure how deep it is, but it's colder than the other springs in ash meadows - this one averages 78 degrees.

flickr has made some changes to their site (no more lightbox that i can see) so i'm hoping these turn out just as good as before.....

this weekend is memorial day weekend. which means??? it's time for jim butler days in tonopah!!

may 23 -25
"downtown" tonopah

there will be a parade, food, vendors & games for the whole family (like single jack & double jack drilling, as well as mucking). various events will be held each day in different locations. the parade is on hwy 95, which is the main road running thru tonopah. vendors & food will also be on the main road. the competition games (single/double jack & mucking) will be held at the mining park, which is directly east behind the mizpah hotel. last year there was wine tasting inside the mizpah, i would imagine that would happen again this year (the owners have their own vineyard in northern california).

weather forecast appears to be C O L D for those of us that like the warm weather - 65 degrees during the day, 45 at night. possibility of rain on sunday. rain won't stop the activities

if you do go, bring a jacket. the wind is ALWAYS blowing in tonopah.

let's take a peek at one of the new hot spots of activity in pahrump!

there is a strip mall located on hwy 372, directly across from a fireworks store & kitty corner to big o tires. it's been here the whole time i've been here & it's housed mostly furniture stores. this year, it's become home to a few non-furniture stores, such as:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/104366...in/dateposted/

when i first saw the sign i thought "sears? huh, i wonder if the sears store we have in town is moving? or if we are getting a whole NEW sears store?" well this week my questions were answered. i drove by the old sears store & found a handwritten sign, written in lime green ink telling the public they have moved to hwy 372. ok, so that explains that. this is the sears store:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/104366...in/dateposted/

i know, i know, it doesn't look like a sears store. i guess they dont' have the "official" sign up quite yet, but upon closer inspection you will see more handwritten signs & stuff for sale

https://www.flickr.com/photos/104366...in/dateposted/

why didn't they use white ink on those new handwritten signs? you'd never know they were in there if you didn't get right up close to it. i'm hoping their official sign will be up shortly....

there is an insurance agent & it looked like a sign company have moved into the complex as well. maybe sears needs to work out a deal with their new neighbors???

also sharing this complex is, hang onto your hats, ANOTHER thrift dollar type store. really? ugh...

https://www.flickr.com/photos/104366...in/dateposted/

so now we have a dollar general up on hwy 160 & blosser ranch rd; a family dollar behind walmart; this dollar tree on hwy 372; another family dollar down on homestead & gamebird; goodwill up in the old ace hardware building; salvation army behind walmart; grocery surplus on hwy 372; not to mention all of the rest of the thrift stores scattered around town. ok ok ok, enough already! can't we get some REAL stores in town now???

ok, summer is officially HERE! this weekend we hit 100+ degrees, which is right about normal for this time of year. however, we didn't sneak up on it like we normally do - ya know, slowly inching our way up the thermometer each day. o no. not this time. we bounced around 88/90 degrees for a few weeks & then BAM!! it was 102 degrees, just like that. the forecast calls for ~104 each day for the rest of the week.

this has been a weird spring. i think there were some days in april & pretty much all of may where it was muggy, like monsoon muggy. we had monsoon cloud formations, we could smell rain & it was sticky. we don't normally hit muggy/monsoon season until july/august, so i'm wondering if the whole summer will feel like monsoon season? we've already got ~2 inches of rain this year, we normally get 4. just gonna havta wait & see

pahrump usually runs 5 to 10 degrees cooler than vegas, as we are at a higher elevation. 5 degrees during the summer months, up to 10 degrees during the winter months.

It's just as hot here where I live in the San Joaquin Valley. We had 100+s all last week, so far this week and it's predicted to be that way the next ten days. I hate summer!
