Anyone have current info on what's up in Ely? How is the local economy. Is there any way to visit without a car?

No.

Ely is isolated.

There is a shortage of housing due to the mining activity in the region.

It is the coldest city in Nevada overall.

Elko can be a better option as there is affordable housing in that area and it is more accessible.

What I meant is there are more options in housing in the Elko/Spring Creek area. Ely has some VERY aged properties that are affordable, but the cheap properties need a great deal of work.

Ely has very few properties available and not much is being built there, whereas Elko has a booming housing industry.

If you WANT to be isolated and do not care about a lack of amenities/isolation. Than, Ely has that in spades.

I know someone who grew up there. She told me the days are very short in many areas of the region because of the mountain ranges and the cold, isolation and lack of amenities caused her to never want to move back. My uncle lived out there and it is a great hunting/fishing area. He loved the cold and the isolation, he was a bit of a hermit type and liked to hunt.
