I'm researching places to move between SLC, Utah and Atwater CA. I have family in both places and would like to be within a one day's drive of both...
I have two little dogs and two cats. I will need to find a place to live and a job. I have only been to Las Vegas and do not want to live there...
Anyone have some suggestions??? I don't have a lot of money ....

You do know this is a NEVADA forum don't you, not Utah or California?

Regardless, I don't know much about Atwater except where it is located and that it is a really small town. Salt Lake City is a large city with everything you might need. If you enjoy breathing fresh air and healthy living go to SLC. If you like to breath agriculture chemicals and be in the middle of nowhere, go to Atwater. But if you want to be a day's drive from both then why don't you look at Reno? Reno is a nice city. Big enough, but not too big. Clean air, lots to do, friendly people, fairly mild climate. Las Vegas is seven hours from SLC, but lots more than that from Atwater. Reno is seven hours from SLC directly on I-80 all the way. Reno is only 4 hours from Atwater. Your chances of finding a job in Reno are good, but better in SLC probably, but I'd imagine next to none in Atwater.

Thank you Buzz and of course I know it's a Nevada thread. I'm not that much of an idiot...
It does say BETWEEN the two cities and Nevada is between the two. I don't want to live in Salt Lake City and I don't want to live in California..... So Nevada is between the two!

I do not like large towns.. I've been living in Tampa, Fl for almost 10 years and dispise it....

I will research Reno....

Sorry, no need to get nasty. It sounded like you were trying to choose one town between the two mentioned, not 'between' the two places. Ha.

Also take a look at the Grass Valley/Nevada City area. The drawback is they are in California, but they are a hop, skip, and a jump from Sacramento, and just a little ways off of I-80. My wife and I love Nevada City. There is more stuff going on there for a small town than there is in many much larger communities.Nevada City Things To Do

And you might look at Carson City if you want a small city. It's beautiful around all those locations too. Lake Tahoe being close to all of them, including Reno, is an added plus too.

Sorry .. I get touchy sometimes .. just had surgery so my hormones are disrupted..
I will look at the cities you suggested .. I'm going to have to take a trip and see what "feels" right. I'll be needing to find a job and a place to live, too. And I know finding work at my age is not going to be easy.. for some reason people like to hire younger..
Thanks for your responses and your advice!

I'll throw this location out there because it is a small(er) town and a booming place if you don't want to be near the metro Reno area ...which, again, is a populous metropolitan area. It's Elko and Elko is booming because of the gold mining industry (click here for an article that explains).

Elko is the largest town on the I-80 corridor between Reno and Salt Lake City so it's not in an absolutely isolated area. However, it is closer to SLC (3-4 hours) and a good 8-hours from Atwater CA.

You probably don't want to work in the mines but perhaps there will be more supporting jobs there as a result. Casinos are another possibility for job possibilities.

The problem, as the article points out, is the scarcity of housing. And of course, there will be a lot of competition for the available jobs there. These two elements would probably discourage you from considering the area but just thought I'd mention it.

Thank you Poopskooper!
I had seen Elko on the map and thought it was pretty much right betwen the two.. I guess I should also mention that I need a gay friendly area... Although I lost my partner two years ago and am not seeking another relationship it's always nice to be among like minded folks... I'm thinking more and more the Reno/Carson City area even though my sister is rooting I pick Merced, CA ... I've never thought of living in CA ... it's a HUGE decision that will take the last of the money I have saved up to make.....

since I prefer warmer weather, I would suggest St George Utah. Not too hot, not too cold, not too big, not too small. Colorful mountains to hike, big ol' river to wade/fish in.

Too far from Atwater, CA though.

In that case I'd suggest Reno is your best bet. I really like Reno, and liked it even more when I was more active. My only objection then (1977-78) was not enough shopping or restaurants. I think that's changed now. Medical services are important now and I think they are excellent there from what I've heard.

I also think Nevada City, CA, might just be acceptive of persons of the gay persuasion. I was also thinking of Elko, but I'd worry about health services there. Plus it may be growing but it is a long way from anywhere. There are legal brothels right down town, but I doubt if that liberal thinking applies to gays as it is still a cowboy town.

BTW: Brothels are almost a necessity in a large empty county like Elko County. The ranches are so far from civilization they probably would never get any cowboys to work there without a place to kick up their heels on Saturday night. Not to mention that the cow counties have few other sources of tax revenue. They are all just miles and miles of miles and miles.

I'd put Reno at the top of the list and go from there.
