I am an experienced above ground miner that is looking at the possibility of relocating to Nevada. Are there any large open pit mines still active? The mine i currently work at is almost at the end of its life and according to recent news i have roughly a year left of work before it will be closing. Any help would be appreciated.

Try Allied Nevada Gold Corp (ANV):Properties:Hycroft Gold Mine

The open pit Hycroft mine is near Sulphur NV (town is long gone) and about 50 miles west of Winnemucca. It's out in the middle of nowhere and the nearest paved road is I-80 about 35 miles away.

There are several Barrick mines operating in the Elko area. I work for Barrick in Montana-it is a good company. We are hiring big time in NV.

In White Pine County, KGHM's Robinson Mine is always hiring. Many of the worker's at Barrick's Bald Mountain live in Ely and take the company provided transport to the mine. Midway Gold is set to open up their Pan Project full scale in the next year or so. There is also a couple of projects in Eureka County that are getting set to open. American Moly is one of them, can't remember who the other one is. Lots of opportunity for miners out here at the moment.

Here are some other open pit mines to look into:

Barrick Gold Corporation - Operations - North America - Cortez - has both open pit and underground mines. Cortez is about 75 miles south of the Beowawe (almost a ghost town) exit off I-80. Nearest town is Battle Mountain.

Barrick Gold Corporation - Operations - North America - Goldstrike - about 20 miles northwest of Carlin,NV. Has both open pit and underground mines.

I work in the Open Pit at Cortez. I drive a Liebherr T282B and a Cat 795F haultrucks.

Starting pay for new hires with no experience is $20.38/hr. Experienced new hires get $22.41/hr. After two years or so you can get up to $26.38/hr. Get signed off on water trucks and you can get $28.59/hr. After that, you're next step would be trainer and that gets you another small bump in raise.

We're still looking for drivers on all 4 shifts. It's a rotating 12.5 hour schedule. We work 5 days, and then off for 5 days. Work for 4 days, then off for 5 days. Work another set of 5 days, then off for 4 days and switch over to night shift, with the same days off and on. B & D Crews have their change-over from nights to days during one of their 5 days off. We get paid 10 hours OT every pay period, unless you decide to work overtime other than you regular days.

The bus rides are 90 minutes each way, if you commute out of Elko. It makes for a long day.
