As for jobs, mining is a major part of the economy here. Customer service would be my second guess.

We're swapping. LOL My boyfriend and I are looking to move to the Reno area in a month, month and a half. We're considering Fernley as well. What brought you to Elko?

I would not agree that this place is a good place to live.
I came here 7 years ago from the UK, here there is nothing to do.
I live in one of the Apt Complexs thats hard to get into. I have a 16 year old Daughter , she was 9 when we came here and so she went through Elememtary, High School and now she is in High School. Not many shops.
There is nothing to do here, unless you plan to find all your fun times going else-where to find things to do, Bringing children up here is not a Plus, except School, but school is not the only thing that a child/ren need.
It is very friendly, on the whole. Crime has never been a problem for us here. We do live in the upper part of Elko, near Angel Park, near Wal-mart.
I am just rambling on here.
If you want to ask me something please do> We are working on leaving here as soon as possible.

Lots of jobs (above ground, in offices or driving large trucks $30.00 an hour or so). Just make sure that you and your kids have hiking boots, and cross country skis.
I know nothing of Apartments, sorry. I would look for a small house, Apartments are not good for kids, kids need a yard.
My wife is from Elko, her stories of her childhood are elegaic.

You do not need a yard for the children , there is nothing wrong with the apts, here. We live just a few seconds from the park, and there are other parks here, Johnny Appleseed Park is good.. There can running around there.

To bluecarangel, I'd just like to verify that your reason for saying Elko is not a good place to live is entirely because your bored?
Im not trying to be cruel or anything like that, I just want to know if Elko in general is a good place to live if you were to exclude your lack of entertainment perspective. Can anyone comment on these other topics please: Good community-decent schools-cost of living-employment opportunities-crime(type of crimes)
I guess im trying to find out if Elko is an affordable place with employment opps and family life. We're looking into buying some land a few miles out from Elko city and building a house, does anyone have avg water depths for well drilling? thx

Fraud suspect nabbed in Oregon with missing kids
By MARIANNE KOBAK - Business Editor
Thursday, January 31, 2008 1:02 PM PS
ELKO - The case started with a fraudulent check in Elko and ended with the arrest of a man wanted in at least five states who was found in the company of two Arizona children missing since July.
U.S. Marshals arrested James Petty, 33, Wednesday night in a suburb of Portland, Ore., seven days after Elko police detective Dennis Price asked the marshals for help.
Price had been tracking Petty after he allegedly passed a fraudulent check at an Elko business in August.
Price said when he started to investigate the case he found Petty was accompanied by Annette Brannen and six children. Four of the children are Brannen's, but two of the children - a 10-year-old girl and an 11-year-old boy - were neither Brannen's nor Petty's, Price said.
When police went to question Petty, he took the children - who had been enrolled in Spring Creek schools for three days - and fled with Brannen and her children.
“He got out of Elko with $150,000 of fraudulent purchases,” Price said.
It took the detective a month to find the mother of the missing children, who was living in Tucson, Ariz., at the time they disappeared.
“Petty has warrants in five different states and some warrants are pending in other states,” Price said. “Every victim I talked to said he is a con, and he is very good. He conned this woman out of her children.”
Price said Petty convinced the mother of the missing children to let him watch them while she went into treatment for alcoholism. She did not know her children had left Arizona until Price contacted her in August.
Petty has yet to be charged with kidnapping since the children's mother never met with detectives in Tucson, Price said. The detective said the mother, now living in Missouri, told him she went to the FBI and they refused to help.
Price did not receive help from the FBI on the case but he did find assistance from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. A woman from the organization contacted the U.S. Marshals, and they used Price's investigation to find the children.
Price had discovered Petty was in the northwest part of the country. The marshals found Petty, the woman and the six children in Oregon. All the children were placed in protective custody.
Price said no charges have been filed against Brannen yet.
“I imagine Oregon will deal with him first,” he said.

There have been a few more than normally crimes occuring lately.. but on the whole its a safe place. My daughter was once threatened the police reacted very quickly...

Thanx for the links bluecar =) Its seems like a good city, but I guess its small size definitely keeps it from being an interesting town =(. I can imagine wanting to find more activities, especially the children.

I have lived in Southern CA (LA County) all of my life. I was considering moving to a city or region in central Nevada or closer to Utah or Idaho. It seems that there is Las Vegas, Henderson, Carson City, Sparks and Reno. The rest of Nevada is small towns and rural life. Elko seems out in the country and quite isolated. Mostly retirees or families. I have seen photos and Elko is so beautiful. I like the wind and open space. But, being an employed single woman with no children, I am not sure Elko would be a good fit for a person like me. Suggestions?

I moved to Elko County about ten months ago from SoCal for a teaching position, and it was a great decision. Of course, it has it's challenges, particularly for a single person, as most everyone is married. The cost of living is great, housing is relatively inexpensive, particularly compared to SoCal, and the kids I teach are some of the best, most interesting I've met. I encourage you to check it out for yourself.
