rob7296-I will try and answer your question, although I'll warn you, I am a hospital worker and don't know the mining industry at all. All I have heard is that the mines are hiring but on a spot-hire basis, only hiring for specific skills they need. Sort of how The Boeing Company is nowadays.

The fact that you're experienced in manufacturing is really a pretty positive thing for you, though. I would apply online at as many mines as you can or come on up here. How far from Elko is Mesquite? I am still new to Nevada (we moved in on May 17th, 2010) so I don't yet know where all the oakie towns in Nevada are yet, though I am learning quickly that after Las Vegas and Reno most of the rest of Nevada is wide open ranching and horse and railroad land with some small oakie towns like Elko and Winnemucca spotted around in it at very far distances from each other.

Mesquite is on the southeast corner of Nevada. It's about a 6 hour drive from Mesquite to Elko. We plan on taking a trip to Elko in about two months to see if we will even like it there. I'm sure we will though. Thank you for your input. How is the Hospital services their by the way?

This was such an interesting read. My sister works at the hospital and has for years (she's a physician). I have never been to Elko but always wondered what it was like. This thread was pretty descriptive. The housing situation sounds sort of crazy. Is the real estate market also tight for people who are interested in buying/selling homes? It's sort of surprising to read that in this part of the early 21st century.

There is still work to be had here. Downside is the mines are being deluged with applications as a result of the faltering economy.

At the moment your best chance for a mine job would likely be at Cortez mine operated by Barrick (you can apply online @ barrick.com, not all available jobs are listed) They are undergoing some major expansion and are hiring fairly aggressively. It can still take quite a while to get hired as a result of the backlog in processing applications.

Another interim option would be to get a job with one of the temporary staffing agencies that supply workers to the mines. It's often easier to get hired by a mine on a full time basis once you've got your foot in the door. Additionally there are a number of support industries that service the mines. Drilling companies, trucking, logistics, electrical, heavy equipment, etc.

By and large the jobs are fairly stable. There are layoffs when gold prices drop and the mines lower production. Given the current state of the economy it's a fair bet gold prices will stay high for the foreseeable future.

Housing is at a premium at the moment. In addition to the mines there is also a large pipeline project underway that's bringing in a lot of people looking for temporary lodging.

As far as Elko being a good place for family that depends on what you're looking for. If you like a small town environment with a lot of outdoor activities it's a great place. Crime is relatively low. Schools are decent though not spectacular.

I've lived all over the place, 11 states and several different countries. Elko has been home for the last 13yrs. I still love it here.

rob7296-being a worker at Northeastern Nevada Regional Hospital I would say that by and large the services at NNRH are good, competent and will help you get better from what you're sick or having trouble with regarding your health.

However, the hospital in Elko is run by a large hospital company that owns and operates scads of hospitals all over the U.S. Our next door neighbor in Elko, who has lived here since the 1980's, says that Elko used to have such a small, "homey" type of hospital. One that was cherished by the community in Elko.

She feels that the prices charged at NNRH are exorbitant. She's not the only one that feels that way. A co-worker who works in the janitorial department at NNRH needed her husband to be seen in our ER. X-rays and blood tests left them with a bill that would be embarassing to reveal here to you all. Just suffice to say that it was large, very large. He needed to be sent to Salt Lake City for further treatment, later.

NNRH is the only hospital within about 175 miles to the south (Ely, NV has a hospital to Elko's south) and 250 miles east of Elko lies Salt Lake City and their large, University hospitals. 260 miles west of Elko sits Reno and a few large hospitals and 229 miles north is Boise, ID, and their hospital system. So if we can't fix you you earn yourself an expensive helicopter ride to one of these city's hospitals. We are very isolated, which only lends itself to overcharging, IMO, because of that very fact.

It's like an auto mechanic charging you what he wants to because "you need your car fixed, right, and to go to another mechanic now will only cost you more for the tow there." See what I mean?

Health care and the high cost of drugs is just another of the ongoing serious problems we are facing in our society. I just peeked at the latest Union contract with Nurses at NNRH and the parent Company is going to ask the nurses to help share more and more of the cost of their own healthcare. Better think twice about striking the Company, after all, you're part of the problem of over-charging for services, right? It's a revolving cycle of high prices, debt and over-charging that, sadly, will only get worse.

And I'm a Respiratory Therapist at NNRH that fully expects his living wage from the Company, too. We all want and we all need our slice of the pie.

It's just that when I hear complaints about the high costs for services at NNRH, I cringe in dismay. I know it's true yet I willingly go to work and fully expect my decent paycheck to plop in to my bank account every two weeks, oh yes I do.

In response to the hospital. It is AWFUL!!!! My son had to have a CT scan and it was going to cost $4200 at the hospital. We had it done at Diagnostic Imaging for $962. My doctor drew blood work and sent ot the lab at the hospital and I received a bill for $526. It should be against the law to charge such prices to people in need when there is no other alternative in town.

Elky, I agree, the prices charged at NNRH are awful, pathetic. I'm going elsewhere to work, too. Uppity, stupid, prideful doctors who can't think straight. The hospital is a mess and I'm on my way to the panhandle region of Idaho. Good riddance, I absolutely hated working at NNRH and I hate how they gouge people with their prices.

Nasty excuse for a hospital.

Hey, uli, thank you for that. I definitely would've taken a look at working in Ely, I like the place. Hard for you to respond if I haven't told you what's going on, though.

Yeah, this place started out good then went downhill fast. A mysterious and paranoid group of doctors here. Doubtful that the same thing would be said of the rest of Nevada's hospitals. I was hamstrung and hogtied and my manager didn't have my back.

Sorry to see you leaving Elko though I understand and agree with your take on NNRH. I've been in Elko for about 15yrs and have heard few good things about their prices and standards of care.
