My family may also be moving to Elko in the next month or so for a possible position at a mine. I have two young kids 5 and 8 and am currently living in a very rural town in northern CA. Just wondering about the size of the town, is everything pretty easily accesible by car or is it more like a city with traffic, congestion and one ways? What types of stores are there? (grocery & clothing) Does it snow a lot in the winter? And finally what is the average rent for say a 2 bedroom house? Thanks in advance for answering any and/or all of my questions!
Congestion in town is a mess at the moment as they are repaving the streets and construction has seriously snarled traffic. Ordinarily congestion is not bad at all. The town is fairly small.

Everything is easily accessible by car. There are very few one way streets, none whatsoever in the business sections.

Grocery stores in town consist of Albertson's, Raley's, Smith's, and an independent (Roy's Market). There are 2 independents in Spring Creek (Khoury's). Clothes shopping is a bit more limited. There is a JC Penney's and a few smaller stores.

Snow varies. Some years we get a lot, others aren't too bad. The city, county, and state services do a pretty good job of keeping the roads in and near town open.

I can't accurately comment on rent. Housing is not inexpensive and is generally at a premium here. You should be able to get a decent idea of rental prices looking at listings in the Elko Daily Free Press; Elko Nevada News

Thanks for the info Outbacknv,
I've been reading the Elko paper but there doesn't seem to be many rentals and most of I see is a lot more then what I would be comfortable paying. Is this the norm, Im assuming with the mines Elko's getting a lot of people coming through looking for places to live and perspective landlords have the ball in their court so to speak? Or is housing always hard to find and normally over a grand a month? Also was curious about the brothels, do they play a big factor in the town? As a mom of two young kids I could go without being reminded that they exist so close to my family. Thanks again for the info.

Housing prices have been high for quite some time now. Rentals are hard to find due to the current influx of people. There are still some decent deals to be found if you're willing to live outside of town.

As far as the brothels go you'd have to go looking for them to even realize they're here.

Thanks again outbacknv,
I'd actually prefer to live out of town, the closest would be Spring Creek right? What's it like there and how far from Elko is it? Any stores there? Price of rent in that area, are there schools or would my kids be attending in Elko? That's good to know about the brothels! You've been more then helpful, thank you again!

Yes, Spring Creek would be the closest. It's about 8miles from town. There are a few stores there. 2 grocery stores, an auto parts store, a few restaurants, and a couple convenience stores. There are schools in Spring Creek as well. Rents there are fairly high. I'd guess they start in the $1000-1200 range and work their way up.

There are also several areas east of town. Kittridge Canyon, White Rock, Osino, Ryndon, and Elburz. The areas become less developed as you get farther from town. Lots range from 2.5 acres up. The downside to these areas is most are accessed via dirt roads. Some of the roads are well maintained, some not so well maintained. Most of the housing is manufactured and ranges from quite nice to fairly ratty. Rents are quite a bit cheaper than town and Spring Creek. You can probably find a decent to nice place for $800-1200/mo.

Outbacknv,
Spring Creek sounds like the farthest I'd like to live from Elko. I am not a fan of snow and hate driving in it so I sure wouldn't want to be that isolated. Thank you for all the information and for getting back to me so quickly, just one more question if you dont mind! When does school start there, Elko/Spring Creek? School where I currently live starts Aug. 16th and was just curious, Thanks again, I greatly appreciate it!

Looks like school starts Sept 22nd (Calendars).

Happy to help. I've lived here 15yrs and am still loving the area. It's not for everyone but it does have a lot to offer.

Feel free to DM me if you want additional info.

outbacknv your awesome!
Thank you so much again and again! We currently live in Alturas, CA dont know if you've heard of it but talk about nothing to offer! I'm originally from the San Fran Bay Area so I have experienced both worlds and prefer a small town feel w/resources. For example if we want to go clothes shopping we have to drive an hour and a half away to Oregon! I'm not a big road trip kind of gal and would love to be able to drive a few miles and get what I need, you know what I mean? Sounds like Elko might be okay for me if I can learn to deal w/the snow, LOL! I will take u up on the DM offer if I have any more questions, very appreciated!

Glad to help. I've not been to Alturas but am originally from California and have a fair idea what the area is like.

Elko is not for everyone but I'd be willing to bet you'll like it here. The snow won't be much fun your first winter but it's really not that big a problem and is easy enough to learn to live with. The local mountains are still snowcapped despite it being in the mid 90's in town. If nothing else they provide a beautiful backdrop on a hot summer day. The winter views are awesome.

Hi Haley,

Sorry it took me so long to reply, things have been hectic lately As Outback has stated everything is pretty accessible around here. Shopping can be a little tough as we do not have much choice- but we do have a Walmart, Kmart, JcPenneys, Fashion Bug, and a Maurices. This fall a new shopping center is set to open with a Ross, Joanne Fabric and a Famous Footwear also, I'm excited lol! My family and I love it here!

To be honest housing is tough around here right now! My sister-in-law looked for months before finding a place to rent. Most, if not all, apartments in town are full and renting with a pet(s) can be even tougher. Spring Creek is a beautiful area and tends to be slightly cheaper. From what I gather from friends look to spend at least $1000 and maybe more like $1200-$1400 a month to rent Again as Outback stated you will most likely forget the brothels even exist, they are set back off the main streets so maybe it's out of sight out of mind...

About the snow, I don't think it snows too much here but I was born in Alaska and raised in Colorado It seems cyclical we will have a heavier snow year and then one like this year where we did not get that much snow all winter and then got one good snow in April. Driving in it is really not all that bad, but one thing you should keep in mind is that if you are living in Spring Creek you will have to come across Lamoille Summit to get into town. It is not a big mountain pass or anything just a slight elevation change but it does get more snow than town. Let me know if you have any other questions!
