Can someone please tell me about boating on Lake Tahoe? I'm thinking of moving to South Lake Tahoe, Zephyr Cove, or Incline Village. Does anyone actually own lake front property with a dock? If so, what sort of price range would I be looking at for a home? If I live off the lake, what are my options? My boat is a smallish ski boat. BTW, any good, calm places to water ski? Thanks!

I don't know anyone with lake front and I cannot begin to imagine the price tag that would come with it. Everyone I know who has a boat at the Lake keeps it at Tahoe Keys Marina.
I vaguely remember hearing over the years of issues with people who bought land at the lake but due to restrictive building codes etc they were not able to develop the land. A good local agent would be able to help much more I would imagine.

Some people have buoys right? Does anyone know what they cost? How exactly do you get to your boat if it's on a buoy? Is Tahoe Keys Marina only for Tahoe keys residents?

There are many marinas that will take your money for a slip, and the bouys are reached by a little dingy/inflatable. Marina's provide them, but you must return them after fetching your boat. Buoy rentals run about $200/Week/$1,200 full season. The Tahoe area vacation homes were hit hard by the economy, and have not rebounded completely yet, however the waterfront properties held their value a lot better because they are so limited. You can get a much better deal Half-mile or so from the water, use a launch ramp in spring and rent a slip or buoy.

Hemlock, when you say "full season" is that a calendar year or just summer? Also, are people able to keep boats in their yard, or is there some restriction against that? Thanks.

The "season" charge is generally based on 180 days, but the start and end can vary depending on the weather. People often keep boats in yards in summer, you wouldn't want to leave it out in winter. Some HOAs will not allow it, though, especially in gated communities and condos. Probably such a ban at Incline. Many high end homes will have a 3 car garage with one higher door for the boat and trailer to overwinter, and there is dry winter storage at many marinas.
