The information I've researched so far leaves me with a few more questions.

Background info on my situation: Husband has rare genetic blood disorder (1 in 100k have it ) and is a disabled Veteran age 46. I'm 61 and healthy. We are interested in moving to a more affordable place. Here's the kicker, our monthly income will top at 2k part of the reason is having raised 6 grandkids and we tapped out.

We like to find a small town in Northern Nevada (so I can drive back to San Diego once in a while to check on my very healthy parents) that will give us less stress, less people, and a quiet place to live. Driving to a VA facility wouldn't be a problem for me but I don't want to do more than an hour one way.

Any and all information about a good town to live in would really be appreciated.

Well if your interested in moving to Lovelock as your other post possibly shows, there is a hospital in Lovelock and you will be 90 miles north of Reno not sure there's a VA hospital there but if so on a 75 mph highway won't take long to get there. Lovelock is a small community of friendly folks, not much work and not much color as far as landscaping, but one can add color as I plan to do. Rentals are around and seem very reasonable. It would be worth checking out, you can log onto the web for the Lovelock Miner and get some more information concerning the town.

Thanks Tressa! You information is the type I'm looking to receive. Fact is this is a 'hurry-up and find-a-place' situation. I know I'm not really aware of the particulars on moving to a new state (property tax, local tax, city tax, etc.) We'll be selling the majority of our things in order to move light. We want a small place that doesn't require him to do much. So the more I learn the better off we'll be.
Once again, Thanks.

You can find a nice little place in Lovelock to rent fairly cheap until you decide if that's where you want to be, the town is very small 2003 population in 2000 census, Pershing County has less 7,000 population and from what I can tell looking at the maps it's one of the largest land wise counties in Nevada, but I could be wrong. The tax base there is 6.35% and no income tax, they don't tax groceries. The property tax appears to be low than what I'm use to anyways, I have 2 each 2.5 acre parcels and has a big shop on it, they assesed the value to be upwords of $50,000 and my property tax was was just over $400.00 last year.

Lovelock can some wind they often have at least a breeze, I've been there when they had tremendous wind and when it's just barely moving, I can deal with either.

Lovelock only seems to have 1 true casino but other hotels and motels, they have car shows, community picnics, some of the area is now wireless for internet service.

Default Lovelock

Lovelock is a small quiet place, last time I was there the people at City Hall seemed kind of grumpy, maybe because the Burning Man thingee makes them that way or maybe I read them wrong. We drove around town and had some teenager in a Ranger following us the whole way, which I though was odd, but in general folks were very friendly, the local policeman even helped me figure out how to put gas into my rental car, (he was inside talking to the local miss).
It has a nice side, a poor folks side, and a cul-de-sac where a bunch? of auto racers live. Very bare landscape all around, nice but not quite my cup of tea.

Elko seemed super friendly also, far from a VA hospital but more choices in everthing and a brand new hospital. I talked to a local cop there also, once again super friendly guy, told me his whole life history it seemed. Everybody was real nice.

I'd say visit, and rent before buying.

Thanks, GBG that is something that my husband will need to look at too the VA hospital that is.

We are less than 200 days from our retirement and our adventures in Nevada and where ever else the wind blows us for at least a year anyways until we settle down in Rocky Canyon. although the house will go up next fall.

We have hauled the horses to the Central Coast, the llamas go tomorrow. We are packing up the house, sure would be nice if someone would buy it!

We have a great location, which makes up for the distance from my favorite wandering grounds in Nevada, here is a photo of the new house with the cabbage and bell pepper field in front. We will live here until we move into the "big house" which is behind the photographer.
