Fallon is a great town. There are lots of things to do. Plenty of shopping, in fact where I live people go to Fallon to do most of there shopping. Lots of good restaurants. One of which is the best Mexican I have ever had. Out door activity's up the ying yang, almost anything you can imagine is right out your front door. With in one hours drive to two of the west coasts largest lakes. Pyramid and Walker. "Summers are not that hot" mid to high 90's (with almost no humidity) in the heat of the summer a few days a little hotter. Cold in the winter but not that cold, especially then the weather is good which is most of the time. We have something like 300+ days of clear weather here. One of the reasons the Navy moved top gun here.. You
Will like your time here.
P.S. 02/20/09 at 13:30 it is 52 deg out side.

fallon is horrible imo. very racist, and yes the cancer cluster i believe is because of the water, they had found jet fuel in the town water, and its loaded with arsnic. the water outside of fallon toward the east and south smells of rotten eggs really bad. fallon is boring, not much to do. it has a huge meth problem.

what is your idea of lots of shopping? the walmart and safeway? theres not much else and yes other people from other towns come here to shop because there is no where else to go. they come from hawethorn which we all know has only a safeway, and they come from lovelock and yerington, gabbs cause there is nothing in those towns. i mean if you love it great but its not a big town, and its not that friendly besides the tree less pyrimid lake and the nasty shrinking walker lake that likes to turn over and smell, theres not much else, oh wait there is lahontan that is really shrinking, and you could drive 2 hours to lake tahoe. its about 6 hours to any beach. you could go hike grimes point, that is kinda cool. the weather is good cant complain about that, the only thing is the winter is cold, with the poka nip however you spell it.

We live 70 miles north of Fallon will go to Fallon to shop at times, I like Big R's or Louie's they are a bit spending but the items are there and even items you didn't know you needed. The golf course is wide open, Fernley is another great little town to shop at with a Lowe's and Super Wal-Mart. We came from Anchorage Alaska and Reno is just too conjested for shopping the traffic is horrible so for us the small town shopping works well, the only time we go into Reno is to pick up family from the airport.

By Nevada standards, Reno is now completely californicated and overrun.
If I had a choice between Fallon and Reno, there's no question I'd pick Fallon.

You have hundreds of miles of empty space to your east. To the south is Yerington/Mason/Smith Valley.
Hunting around Fallon is pretty good. There's fishing in the Churchill Reservoir, and to your east, you have the mountains surrounding Austin. North you have Pyramid Lake, south your have Walker Lake and the Walker/Carson rivers.
For open road biking, Nevada is hard to beat - buuuuuut.... to be really truthful about what you should expect, I'll say this: there's a LOT of interesting stuff in Nevada that isn't on paved roads. The really cool stuff outdoors is on county, maintained, but dirt roads, and I don't know if you'd want to get your HD dirty or nicked up with gravel. A DP bike would be absolutely ideal in many areas of NV.
Weather: you should expect the mildest winters in northern NV - yes, it can occasionally get pretty cold in Fallon, but it is almost always warmer than just about everywhere else in northern NV, because you're in the "banana belt" at a lower elevation. In the summers, you're also a tad hotter -- perhaps up to 100F more often than the rest of the northern NV areas, and you won't cool off at night as much. As a farmer who used to farm in NV, I can tell you that east of Fallon, hay farmers get three cuttings of alfalfa per year - in Fallon, they get four. That gives you a relative idea of the increased growing (ie, non-frost) season in Fallon - at least 20 days, more like 30 days.
If you're into hunting, ask away, but I won't bore you with the details of huntins unless you're interested. It won't be at all like hunting back east.

Arsenic is a problem in water all over the intermountain west. It isn't unique to Fallon. High levels of arsenic can be problematic, but until you get to levels approaching 80 ppb, there's nothing in the published literature that can show a systemic problem. Some of Fallon's water is about 40 +/- ppb.
The sulphurous smell in the surface water is a consequence of the predominate geology of the area. That's what salt flats and playa smell like when they're wet. Playa all over the state smell exactly the same.
The jet fuel in the water is an issue, true. It is a consequence of our wonderful federal government, who likes to hold the non-government population to one standard for adherence to the law... but they'll exempt themselves from compliance. After all, they're the government. They don't have to follow laws.
And as for racism: I've lived all over the US. The most racist place I lived was California, where they have more racists than anywhere I've been in the US, by a long shot.

A matter of taste -
I was born and raised in a small Southern Idaho farming community very similar to what Fallon was 25-30 years ago. It was a pleasure to move here and we (the family) found something new every weekend to do. The mountains, the flats, the sand dunes, Reno and Carson City, fishing, hunting, sports shooting, great photography and even gold panning. If you are into the outdoors this is a great place. If you want the night life, a variety of shopping opportunities and crowds of people Reno and Carson is just an hours drive away. If you’re a biker you will enjoy “Streets of Thunder” and the hundreds of bikes that show up for it. Hot August nights brings some of the best in classic cars; rodeos, races (auto and bike), no reason not to have a great time while your here. The worst thing about Fallon is the growth and a desire by planners to follow Washoe Counties (Reno) lead. Come here and you may not want to leave. mod cut: soliciting removed
