Cancer cluster is true in Fallon
"Wikipedia" validates that cancer cluster info. I looked into Fallon myself because of incredible home prices & the statistics of leukemia cases were so high, it was horribly ALARMING. No rumor; the real deal. Yikes. Maybe live in one of the nearby towns; quite a few in that area to choose from.

Who validates Wikipedia? The article was probably posted by a 16 year old sitting in his mother's basement and who's never been to Fallon or knows anything about tainted groundwater. It was probably all copied off other websites.

Much was made in the press of the "cancer cluster" in Fallon, but when one gets into the details of each individual case, one sees that it is a statistical fluke. People were making a big deal of the per-capita rate of cancer in the area, but they ignored the people who had recently moved to Fallon - in one case, it was a person who moved to Fallon to be near medical treatment.
The entire treatment was a prime example of why liberal arts majors writing blather in the media are worse than useless at informing people of issues involving math and science.

Which is really odd, because the only thing boiling water will do is is kill bacteria, viruses and some other biological contaminants.
It won't do a thing for heavy metals, it is largely ineffective against organic chemicals in the water, etc.
Since people were concerned about arsenic and jet fuel contamination in the water, I have no idea what boiling the water was supposed to do.

I too read about the cancer cluster. Article I read said it was mainly children affected and they think it has to do with the airplane fuel being released before landings at the base. Planes fly over town constantly.I never drink the water from town! Only bottled water at this house.Do heavy metals only affect you if you ingest them? Or can they also affect you by bathing in the water?

Most heavy metals in elemental form would affect you only if you ingested them or inhaled them. Many, not all.
The metals most prevalent in higher-than-regulatory limits in western water tables are things like arsenic and lead. The new (since 2000) regulatory limit for arsenic in water is 10ppb; there are many water systems in the west that have levels in the range of 15 to 40ppb.
The fuel in the water at Fallon is from a plume of military jet fuel from leaking tanks at the NAS Fallon over the years. As is usual, the government loves to enact tough environmental regulations - the government doesn't like to actually comply with the regulations, however.

Being retired we wanted a safe place. We have it here. 4 seasons and not hot like the central valley. Its actually a bit cooler here than the California central valley and we get a dusting of snow off and on through winter which is really refreshing. We atv, shoot and no one thinks we are one bit out of the ordinary. If you are willing to become like Fallon residents, you are welcome but don't try to change Fallon or you will find you are not welcome. Fallon is set in its ways and is a free country to do pretty much as you wish as long as you do not impose on others with your ideas or try to change them. No gangs and no one to join them.
