Moving to Fallon!!!
Well I am active duty in Virginia Beach, I will be moving to Fallon for the next 3 years. I need advise on what to expect. I spend most of my time out of work on a Harley and on the Golf course! I am also a HUGE outdoorsy type, What do yall recommend? thanks for your help.

I have visted Fallon Base several times to go to the commisary. It seemed very barren and isolated, and having come from Virginia I can tell you the diff between Fallon and VA Beach is like Night and Day. I also heard, and maybe someone can give more info on this, as I am not preporting its 100% accurate, but, fallon has a higher than normal incidence of childhood leukemia.

Yes, there is a so-called cancer cluster in Fallon. They still haven't 100% confirmed why, but much research has been done and they've found elevated levels of Benzene, Tungsten, etc. in the area.
Personally, and I'm not trying to be negative or hurtful to those who live in the Fallon area, but I really dislike Fallon. It's a small town with very little in the way of charm or character. It's also quite hot in the summer (a good 5 degrees more than Reno on average) and feels completely isolated. Some people enjoy the wide open barren landscape of the desert, but I prefer a bit more variety in my scenery, of which Reno offers a nice compromise. In any event, be prepared to drive to Reno/Sparks often.....it's the only place nearby where you can do any real shopping, dining out, etc. Reno also offers more in the way of outdoor-related activies closeby, although there are ample opportunities for fishing/off-roading near Fallon. On a random side note, they grow really good cantelopes in Fallon (Heart O' Gold).

I've been to Fallon a few times never longer than a day so I can't be of great help here, but I kind of liked the place. the folks are very welcoming the mom and pop outfits have some really cool gagets for lawn decorations to just about anything you would be looking for. I will be moving to Lovelock which is a great deal more isolated than Fallon so maybe that's why I liked it. Good luck on your move, you can make it yours and enjoy it if you put your mind to it.

Get a good hat and long sleeve shirts to keep the sun off and use your off days to explore. (And always take more water than you think you will need) To the west you have Reno, to the north is Mark Twain country (and real north is Burning Man) to the east are some of the biggest sand dunes around, also ghost towns, and to the south are more ghost towns and stuff. Travel on highway 50 goes really fast because it is nearly all yours.
You have to make due with what it is. If you like, for example, Motorcycle riding really fast, long range target shooting, and I would recommend photography, it can be a fun three year adventure.

Fallon is great!!
Moved here in 1986,from Southern California and even tho Fallon has grown greatly it's still the best place for us. If you like friendly people and a small town attitude with larger cities and areas (Tahoe to ski, Desert to ride horses or vehicles, lakes to fish or boat on, Reno approx an hour away for that bigger city adventure).
The people in this area will help you at the drop of a hat - even if they don't know you. You will always find some who just "h a t e s" an area (they need to move on). We have a 30 acre ranch with lots of animals right in the fly zone. In general this city loves it's military, and has very patriotic and giving people. We considered moving a few years back, and realized - WHY??
We love Fallon and were glad we were able to find the right parcel for our needs. Hope you enjoy the area.

Sell the Harley buy a dirt bike with a large fuel tank. Long straight roads aren't much fun on a road bike, but there are thousands of miles of dirt roads to explore, and sand mountain

Where you are is what you make it. But it is one place in american that people smile and speak, offer a helping had or advise (know you or not) and none of your things walk away if you turn your back or leave them out. I LOVE IT. 11 year and staying.
