When I switched insurance companies, I gave it about a week. I was in no rush - I know the fines are very high, and the difference in my premium refund for a week is cheap insurance against having to deal with the mess, especially if there's no actual lapse in coverage. The LAST thing I'm interested in doing is having to prove my innocence to people that think that software never screws up.

Or if you get home from a trip on a weelkend when dmv i sclosed and have to resume registration after having turned in the plates and have to drive to work on Monday? Are you going to spend the whole day at dmv again by getting there on foot? Who is going to reimburse you for the left-off registration? What about snowbirds like me? I am a resident of Florida, but I have second home in NV and I work there ehen I am there. therefore, i have to change my license plates to Nv every month I go back and forth? Ha-ha! I am a substitute teacher who can work on call in any state I register to sub. I keep one vehicle in NV that is parked by my property. I cannot turn in license and registration, because they are required for parking there. Why does the parked vehicle need insurance? Maybe, storage insurance, yes, but liability? Unless, it drives itself. I am surprised that nobody hads yet filed a class-action lawsuit against the silly and unconstitutional law that violates 8th amendment of the US Constitution that prohibits excessive fines. How could the smart voters entrust the power to the ignorant governor who even gives out legal documents to illegals against the federsl law? They tyhink he cares about them while he just want their money to add to his state coffers. Open your eyes, people, impeach!

If you turn in your plates before they are expired you do get refunded the amount left.

I don't think a lot of the laws make sense in the way they end up working. This law likely does little to accomplish much towards preventing hit and runs or anything.

I once got pulled over for not having insurance and ticketed. After that I could not get insurance. I finally asked one agent and he said it was worse than having a DUI, they'd insure a person who had a DUI before someone who had a ticket for not having insurance.

The insurance went up to nearly 500 a month. I got rid of the car, got a bike and gave the man the bird.

You're not exactly refunded. You get a credit for the prorated amount, which you can use toward the registration of another vehicle. The credit will decrease in value as time goes on, though, and hits zero when your original registration would have expired.

OP, I hope you now realize how important it is to carry insurance, use a cc if you have to: whatever, what would happen if you were involved in an accident and were uninsured? I don't care if you were only without it for 2 days, that is 2 days too long. We all have financial problems from time to time, sometimes we don't or didn't know where the next dime was coming from, but there are responsibilities that must be addressed.

Good luck in the future and please keep the insurance paid up or park the car 'til you have the money to pay it.
