Hi Zapata--

The highway, some call it Blue Diamond Road (or route 160) or the press has referred to it as "the widow maker" because of the high death rate, is really being focused on for improvements. I think it's had more than a dozen deaths along it since last fall.

Since the moderators seem to think that giving a link to a newspaper article is advertising or spam, I'll try to PM you the link to a good article from the Las Vegas paper. I don't know if it's the same one that mbbadmin had posted but it's from a January and it appeared in the most prominent local paper. It's very informative as it describes the highway and what is in store for it.

Anybody else who wants the link, PM me.

Hi zapata!

Yeah, that commute is a bad one. However, entering Las Vegas from any direction during the rush hour is going to be a pain. Just as in any large metro area, the traffic is ugly. The way people are driving is also getting worse and worse. Lots of road rage, lots of illegal driving, lots of hit and runs, etc.

I just want to re-iterate what the previous poster alluded to... the Pahrump-LV commute can be a dangerous one. I drove it for 1.5 years and said my prayers throughout each trip. High-speeds on a 2-lane curvy road that traverses a high-altitude mountain (i.e. winter snow) is not a good combination.

Another poster mentioned the benefits of manufactured homes. I know there are many opinions out there, both pro and con, as far as manufactured homes are concerned. Really my point is that... personally, if I have just spent over $200,000 on real property, I wouldn't be too happy if a manufactured home was put-up next to my house (which does frequently happen in Pahrump, thanks to the lack of zoning regulations). Manufactured homes may, or may not, be considered real property and may, or may not, appreciate. Are you willing to take a chance that your new neighbor will buy a beautiful new manufactured home? The reality is that you may be looking at a decrepit '74 Buick on concrete blocks about 100 feet away from your perfectly manicured lawn. Just something to think about.

There is a lot of things about Pahrump you might not like. Such since it is in the county of Nye, you should know that this county has been labeled the most corrupt county in the US. The FBI has many investigations going on like the last 2 elections here.

The heat is unbearable, in the summer time, with temps hitting 115 degs or more. Some summers like this one can start very early in the year like May. This hear we hit 100 on May 6, and except for 2 two day periods was any where from 100 to 105 for May. June was worse, and July forgetaboutit!

We do got a Wal-Mark here, and a Ace Hardware store. Before Wal-Mark came, you either got what you needed at the Hardware store, or drove the hour to LV. We have no movie theater, as of yet, nor of much else except the casinos.

The water is running out, and people keep coming, plus depending where you move to, you can be hooked up to one of the three privet water companies. The one I got I would NOT drink the water with out filtering first. In the summer time the water out of the tap is hot to warm.

If you got kids you should know the state of Nevada is ranked 48th in education, there is nothing for them to do, and crime is bad due to the problem we have here with Meth and Meth Labs.

I myself will be moving out of here as soon as I can, after being here now for 5 years.

The commute to LV is a big drag. While most of the road is now 2 lanes in both directions, there is about 2 accidents per day on it, mostly single car roll overs. There are no shoulders on the road, so if you go off the road, you can end up in a ditch or go airborne by hitting ground that is higher then the road.

Add the heat during the summer, and your tires and battery will have a short life span out here. Also there is NOTHING between towns out here, so you can travel 50-60 miles with out seeing a gas station, phone, etc. If you break down you better have water to drink with you! Each year out here you hear of people who die from the heat. Since once it starts to effect you will will wonder off, and they will find your body days later, that's if they are looking for you.

The price of Land has gone up big time, but depending where you are coming from you might think it's still cheap. One thing about housing you should know, as some one has already posted, you could get a trailer/prefab house next to you. But also this area is considered rural, so your next door neighbor might have horses, pigs, chickens, goats, lions, tigers, etc. Pahrump has the highest privately own wild animals in the US. So if you always wanted that tiger, you can do it here.

Also we do have scorpions, mountain lions, killer bees, 5 types of poison spiders. Now I have been here 5 years and during that time we only had two mountain lion warning, where they spotted one in town, and it killed a few turkeys and chickens.

I have only seen 2 scorpions in my home in that time also, and heard of only one time dealing with killer bees. So it really isn't that bad, just know they are out here.

I agree with everything Old Salt said here. I moved to Pahrump from the San Francisco Bay area a scant nine months ago and I already can't wait to leave this place.

In addition to what Old Salt said, let me add that the winter here is just as cold as the summer is hot, especially the nights. Pahrump has many winter nights with overnight temperatures in the teens. Add to that, all year round, it is very windy here about 90% of the days, which I hate even more than the winter cold and the summer heat.

The drivers here suck. They are worse than those in California. Pahrump is growing so fast--in an uncontrolled and unmanaged fashion--that, to me, it is just like living in any Bay area or Los Angeles suburb . . . crowded, busy, noisy, miserable traffic, and crime-ridden. Never in a day would I advise anybody to move here. I am counting the days until I can get out of here.

I lived in LV from 94 to 99 and knew several people who made that trip. As long as there's not an accident on the way in, it's a pretty straightforward drive. The problem is getting through Vegas once you hit the west side of town (which is where you come in from Pahrump). The traffic there has gotten brutally bad, so especially if you have to get to the East side of town, expect a long commute once you hit town.

Also, it snows in the mountain passes between Vegas and Pahrump, which will ***** your commute up as well. Many people actually bought snow chains to keep in the car/truck for the really bad days.

Bob

citygonecountry is on a distinguished road
After over 10 years in Vegas my husband and I gave up on trying to grin and bear the increased traffic, crime and crowds. We sold our home and bought another in Pahrump. Folks in Vegas thought we'd lost our minds. For a while, I did, too. But, although I do miss the city life of Vegas at times, we made the right decision. First, be very aware that whether leisure or business Pahrump moves at a much slower pace than LV - no overnight changes here. We've been here a couple of years and my gripes include: unless you're into RV'ing and/or roping you'll have to create your own fun. It's a complete wasteland in cultural events arena. I've actually been excited over tickets to high school production of Shakespeare The movie theatre that should open soon is greatly anticipated; only so much bingo, casino gaming and WalMart shopping a gal can do. Although crime hasn't been an issue for us (knock on wood), the one time we called for assistance for a minor issue, it took the sherrif's dept over 6 hours to respond, so be aware that agencies/bureaus here like the sherrif's dept and the business office do not work like greased lightning. Now, the good. First off, the slow pace is a welcome change from Vegas. Few tourist. Inhabited mostly by retirees and families encouraging friendly and relaxed atmosphere. For a town this size, the library system is good. New 2 and 4 year college (Great Basin College) is now open - learning is a good thing at any age. There are things to do here or near hear if you search them out. Suggest you contact chamber of commerce and ask for any and all tourist info. If you're an outdoor enthusiast, Red Rock is nearby and offers tons of walking/hiking/biking trails. If you're an RV'er you've hit mecca - several RV'ing clubs that routinely get together for trips - same with motorcycles. The commute to Vegas? Although I gave up on the drive 6 months after moving here, my husband has faithfully done it 4 days a week for the past 2 years without complaint. He claims that the drive serves as a decompression period for him and points out that the drive into Vegas from here takes about as long as when we lived in Vegas trying to get from one side of town to the other. I've found the drive is easier if you go thru the Red Rock area instead of fighting your way thru Blue Diamond pass, or if you have business in NW Vegas, it's a very smooth (sometimes lonely) drive if you go the "long" way thru Indian Springs. All in all, we're still happy with our decision to move out here, and hopefully, with the influx of new folks with common goals it will get better for all of us. Good luck with your move.
