I'm checking for what laws/regulations, if any govern security deposits:

1. Is there a limit to how much security deposit you can ask for?

2. Is there a deadline by which you have to return the security deposit after the tenant moves out?

1. I don't believe there is. There are many cases where landlords ask for the entire rental period paid up front so limits seem unlikely.

2. I believe it is 30 days. I have always tried to settle it much sooner, usually get it done in 7-10 days.

1. 3 times the rent. (e.g. - rent is $1000, most allowed is $3000)

2. 30 days.

You should probably start by reading Nevada's Landlord-Tenant Act, NRS 118 and NRS 118A.

Specifically, NRS 118A.242 forbids landlords from collecting security deposits of more than 3 months rent (including last month's rent). It also requires the landlord to provide the tenant with an itemized written accounting of the security and the remainder of the deposit within 30 days. Whether you're a landlord or a tenant, you should be familiar with NRS 118A.242.
