My 18 yo son bought an awesome 1995 Dodge Truck for $500. I couldn't believe it! Maybe needs $150 for starter and brakes since i'll do the work. So, we're off to the DMV to register the truck and I ask him for the Title, and he hands me a "BILL of SALE!" Uhmm title? he says, "huh?" LOL

So we go to the seller and he says HE bought it 2 years ago from someone and without a title as well. Doesn't remember how or how, but remembers he paid $700 and couldn't register it because "NO TITLE" so he sells it to my son for $500! Could use it as a parts source but we don't have another Dodge truck that needs parts or repair.

DMV says "easy!" Get the registered owner to request a duplicate title or send you an authorization to get one. Ok, Ms DMV! Here's the VIN#. Cops say its clean. Carfax says its clean. Give me the name of the registered owner so I can contact them. Ms DMV says "no, can do. Privacy issue." But, she says I can hire an authorized detective company. I call and its $900.

So question is. Short of selling it for parts on CRAIGS and recovering maye $200 of my son's $500, is there anything I can do. Any loop holes or work arounds. Any VIN # trades, any legal info that can get it done based on lack of any info from the DMV or cooperation. Any putting up of a bond (TX does this) anything at all so we don't lose the $$$ or the truck!???? Any ideas? Anyone that works at the DMV here?

Are there any back taxes due? If it's worth it why not just spend the $900? Then just ride it until the wheels come off.

Cuz $500 sounds better than $1400 total ...lol

seriously there has to be a way to find an owner...even if the DMV contacts them! So what happens with a car like that? You cant even junt it a Pick-A-Part, they want a title...

The only other way to get rid of it is to dismantle it, piece by piece. Dispose some of it in your regular trash, take some of the metal to a recycling facility, etc. The scrap value may surprise you.

Do you know any cops who can run the plate and get the registered owner information for you? If not, then I would go back to the seller and demand that he give back the $500, if he refuses take him to small claims court. The only other thing that I can think of is call some tow yards and see if they have any ideas, they get stuck towing abandoned vehicles and end up junking them or selling them at a lien sale- I'm pretty sure they either have a way of getting the title information or are getting rid of them without a title.

Contact them and demand money back for return of the vehicle. If they refuse you might want to consider contacting the local PD, in many states it's a crime to sell a vehicle you do not have proper title to (fraud at best) and that will result in recovery much faster than small claims.

Never buy a vehicle without a properly assigned title in the sellers name, no title jumping, no missing title.. ever.

If you're friendly with a mechanic, you could have them put a mechanic's lien on it. I know it costs some money, but it'll be less than the $900 for the PI and you don't have to go through as much paperwork hassle.

There are several states where you can legally register a car that is over a certain number of years old without a title and you can do it through the mail and don't have to live there either.

I think Vermont is one. Maybe. Alabama or Maine too.
Once you register it there you can transfer to Nevada anytime.
