I'm looking at attending the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Elko in 2009 (never did make it to the 2007 one, if you remember my posts). If it wasn't in January, my significant other and I would camp out without a doubt, but we'd prefer a roof over our heads in the cold weather. I found a lot of motel listings in Elko, some very inexpensive, and I'm wondering if any travelers out there could give me an idea of which ones are not too seedy for the price. The fuel cost for two days' drive up there will consume a lot of money that would otherwise go towards lodging, so my budget is very limited ($50 a night or less is most feasible). Or, if you know of any other creative lodging ideas, I'm open to suggestions. Thank you!

The last couple of times I've been to Elko, I have stayed at Stockmen's Hotel. It's downtown about 1/2 mile from the convention center where they have the poetry gathering. The hotel has a casino, bar, restuarant and sometimes some entertainment (usually country music). Across the parking lot is the Commercial Club, another casino with a bar. Anyways, the place has always been a little cheaper than the Motel 6 down the street.

And yes, the Motel 6 at the far east end of town is another possibility.
