So we're in agreement that the Las Vegas taxi industry needs to clean up its act. I'll take a cab in London without hesitation -- they're not going to try to screw me. The industry there is unimpeachable. Not so here. And that's why Uber exists.

I've been reading these cab threads for quite awhile now, even though I don't have any skin in this game. (I don't take cabs in this city. The average cabbie here is dishonest and I don't reward that.) These Uber threads have been going on for the better part of a year. And you've done plenty to try and smear Uber as a bad choice. You're just as guilty of the "us vs. them" mentality as others.

The problem with longhauling is that everyone who claims to try to stop it are actually profiting from it!

One simple solution to the problem is to fine a DRIVER $300 first time and the COMPANY $3000! I guarantee that longhauling would stop in a heartbeat.

I was written up quite a few times for low book when in actuality I averaged 4-5 more rides that day then the shift average....why did I low book? Because I didn't longhaul and I also didn't pass up short rides.

Vegas Cabbie is correct about being instantly judged....I even had to fight that when using Industrial and other side streets. People would think and argue about being longhauled despite what I told them...until I got them where they were going in record time and cheaper than they'd gotten there before....there's not a whole lot of thanks from any direction for NOT longhuling.

Then there are the people, locals included that think they know the best way and really don't. Locals are infamous for that....what they don't know is that cabs often have a certain entrance or lane they have to be in. Sure you know how to get TO the casino, but we know how best to get you to the DOOR.

Along with current events about the city it helps if you also know tons of trivia too.

Let's not forget that despite what's going on in our lives or if we feel sick, our finances dictate that we stay "UP" all day long so as to get good tips. We are part of your vacation.

Another problem with the cab industry is actually with the Government...they give incentives to the companies to hire foreigners that do not speak English, do not like you, want to rip you off, hate this country, hate LV and will do what they can to get over.

As for locals getting cabs....YOU are the problem my friends...when I started I tried to haul locals...I was ignorant!

Locals expect you to drive out to Red Rock or South Point area only to drive them six blocks to the casino and give you a dollar tip....That's IF they were even there when you arrived. I cannot tell you how many no-shows there are from locals.

The only locals I hauled generally were the strippers...if they liked me they'd get my number and call me directly when they needed a ride. I also had a few regular tourists/business people do the same.

Monorail? Pfffft! no one wants to lug their luggage on that thing and have to stop at every stop! They are in Vegas Baby! They want someone to lift their luggage for them and get them to check-in fast so they can hit the town.

Why wouldn't I point out Uber's faults... Which there are plenty of and it's an easy thing to do. I have also praised a few things here and there with them... Like the tracking ability the app offers.
Obviously I am going to defend my profession lol... I think it's ridiculous to point that out in a "Gotcha!" like manner.
There is a VERY simple fix to a lot of the gripes if you don't trust a cabbie. Provide the route.
"Gotta go to Red Rock, let's take Summerlin Parkway"
"Done"

...not that hard.

To lawfully pick someone up in Las Vegas, a driver requires two things... A specific destination and a form of payment. That's it... The passenger has more control than they think.

If you happen to be getting long hauled, be proactive... Call them out on it and call the TA. Mark the cab number down as well as the company of the cab and the time you're in it... TA number is 702.668.4000... If we can get douchey drivers off the streets, it helps everyone.
There are bad apples in every profession... And the people working to do the right thing hate those bad apples more than anyone... Just like a used car lot. There are good dealer and really shady ones... But you can't call the whole damned dealership crap because of a few tards

What's topical about this? NY and LV are completely different...there's absolutely no comparison.

What most of you fail to realize is that it's the CASINOS that are gonna decide things in the end....wanna know why you can't buy a Powerball ticket in NV?

No because it reminds me of the awesome weather I get to live in here as opposed to what it was like living in Wisconsin.

No, the stupid questions get old though:

"Do you actually LIVE in LV?" ......
"Where DO people live in LV?" .....
"Are there any good restaurants in LV?" .....Seriously?
"What's there to DO in LV?" ......Really?

Funny, the article starts out discussing Atlanta. Maybe you should read the article before commenting on it.

What's topical is that airports all over the country are opening up to Uber and it's competitors. If the LV taxi industry expects the airport to be their fortress, I think they're going to be sorely disappointed.

That has to be my all time favorite question: "Do people live in Las Vegas?"
lol no... The 200,000 strip employees you see rise out of Lake Mead each night like Godzilla. And all those houses you flew over when you got here are for the coyotes lol.
Overall, I love the questions in general though. The business people are the worst
"Jack, did Charles get CC'd on the email about the presentation? Gosh, he really hit it out of the park with the Johnson Controls report. I feel like-"
Shhuuuut uuuuuppppp lol.
